Yeah, I google'd it and when I saw the posters, I started to have a bad feeling. So I didn't bother to search for it any further and just waited for someone to give me more info.

There's still controversy? It's a 40-year-old German arthouse film. How many people even talk about it nowadays outside of the most dedicated cinephile groups?

Interesting. This film won an Oscar, has a Criterion edition, and is listed in 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die.

Errrrrr..... is it THAT bad?

This reminds me when my grade school son came home and announced in the early 2000's there were 3 more older Star Wars movies that were already out.

OP, in light of today's standards relative to the controversy that took place 40 years ago. ...reminds me of the saying, There is nothing to see here.

There wasn't even a controversy 40 years ago. In 1979, the film co-won the Palme d'Or at Cannes, played a very successful and acclaimed run all over the world, and won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

The 'controversy' amounts to that, in 1997, there was a local 'controversy' in a town in Oklahoma, when a guy rented the film from a Blockbuster Video, where it had been collecting dust as a catalog rental title. This guy decided to be outraged by it, and reported it. Another guy rented it after him, and Blockbuster (who'd RENTED to him) sent the cops to his house. They confiscated the film. A local minister decided to actively protest the then-almost 20 year old film, and the guy who'd been busted with it was some ACLU guy who then decided to get a lot of press for himself by exploiting the situation. A number of people came out in defense of the film.

Anyway, long story short, a court ultimately decided that the film was perfectly legal, and there is an actual legal precedent on the books now declaring it so.

Criterion released it in the US on DVD and then blu ray, after it had been available on Warner Home Video on VHS for years. There's a whole little doc. on the Criterion edition discussing that case.

There is absolutely no need for concern buying or viewing the film, though.

In 1994, an Ohio video store was raided and shuttered for renting Pasolini's "Salo". Ultimately, that case was not only dismissed, but the police had to return and the tape to the store and the court ordered the police dept. to pay rental fees on the film for MONTHS they'd had it in evidence, LOL.

I'm leaning to not-pedo, I just like to hear opinions on the "controversy", as not alot of people on the internet are talking about it.

Because there’s nothing to talk about. So you’re forcing the issue because you’re bored?

The most amazing part of that story is that a Blockbuster Video had a movie as cultured as The Tin Drum on its shelves.

He/she is just trying start a discussion is all. That's what forums are for, right?
Even though I am having trouble talking about something of this subject matter.

But even people who have seen the film - like me - would have trouble talking about it because there's no controversy. That particular scene might have ruffled a few feathers decades ago, but not anymore. Maybe someone who was aware of it back then could share their memories of it, if they have any. That seems like a stretch, though.

If this is a discussion, it's one without a subject.
