Default Clash By Night (1952) coming from Warner Archive

George Feltenstein revealed on today's episode of The Extras podcast that Warner Archive will be releasing Clash By Night:
Quote:
We will be releasing another film of [Marilyn Monroe's] in a few months in which she had a pretty significant...people can probably figure out what it is...but it is a film where she wasn't the leading lady but she kind of had the second lead. It's a dramatic film in which she has a very light role and she was very impressive in it and it was right before she became a huge star. People can figure out what it is but I'm not going to spill the beans at this moment.

Mae Doyle is a good-time girl, but now times are bad. Weary of too much booze and too many men, she returns to her girlhood home, the fishing village of Monterey, California. There she finds security as the wife of a devoted and dull fisherman and passion in the arms of his provocative best friend. Film noir master Fritz Lang (The Big Heat, Ministry of Fear ) directs four towering talents -- Barbara Stanwyck, Paul Douglas, Robert Ryan and rising star Marilyn Monroe -- in a stark tale of lives burnished by human emotion and shattered by human failings. Intense and powerfully realistic, Clash by Night (from a Clifford Odets play) is about many towns, many families. Serene on the surface. Roiling with desperation underneath. With Lang at the helm, superb performances, and sensational cinematography by Nicholas Musuraca, CLASH BY NIGHT looks better than ever on Blu-ray!

Anywhere? Or just domestically (in the States)?

I’ve just begun working on adding the Lang releases I don’t own on blu-Ray. I have a number of his Masters of Cinema discs to pick up, even though I already own the Kino issues. I think Eureka’s Metropolis, Faust releases represent upgrades where the extras are concerned.

Die Nibelungen came in two days ago, and I was set to order more this weekend, but I grabbed the Early Murnau collection, and the three Pasolini movies that were about to go out of print first.

Anywhere, I guess.

Only ones I know of that are not on BD (including those coming out within the next couple of months) are Liliom and The Blue Gardenia.

All the rest have US BDs, except Testament of Dr Mabuse and 1000 Eyes of Dr Mabuse, which both have great UK BDs that play on some US machines too.

The MoC Metropolis is also superior because it has the original German title cards with subtitles, while the Kino disc has English-language title cards that imitate the font of the original German cards.

I’m region free now, but wasn’t when I first bought the Kino titles I mentioned. Now, I much prefer Eureka’s releases. And yes, I’d read the MoC Metropolis was better. I can keep the Kino to loan out, but subsequent viewings will be of the MoC, once I get it.

I just added all the Billy Wilder titles I didn’t have, as well. Eureka’s losing so many licenses has pushed up my timeline. That’s okay. I can afford it, and don’t want to miss out.

The Kino Lang Silent box set is needed for a bunch of titles Eureka hasn't done, however. My understanding is that Metropolis is the only one where the MoC is hugely superior.

Are there any other titles in the Kino Lang Silent set where you think the Eureka version is really worth buying as well? I'm not asking to be snide, I'm genuinely asking, I haven't done side-by-side comparisons or anything.

The ones in the Kino set that Eureka has also done are:

Destiny / Der müde Tod
Dr. Mabuse: The Gambler / Dr. Mabuse der Spieler
Die Nibelungen
Spies / Spione
Woman in the Moon / Frau im Mond

I can’t remember anything specific to any of the other Lang titles as far as technical presentation is concerned. But DVD Beaver noted the AR of the Kino Faust disc looks a bit squished horizontally. The MoC has more score options, and has two versions (domestic and road) to one for the Kino.

The MoC releases also always include booklets that the Kino releases do not.

Going back to Wilder, the Kino release’s picture quality for A Foreign Affair just got panned by the three forum members that reviewed it. And DVDBeaver stated it was clearly the best release to own.

I just trust Eureka’s quality control more, and they generally have better extras.

The Kino and Eureka releases of A Foreign Affair look pretty much identical to me:

https://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?go=1&...166799&i=5&l=0

They're both from the same dated but watchable DVD-era HD master.

Beware, there are two MoC/Eureka releases that are HUGELY inferior to their Kino counterparts, however:

Five Graves to Cairo
The KL disc uses a new 4K master from the original negative. Eureka claimed theirs would use the same master in all their pre-release promotions, but at the last minute, they removed that wording, and they used the ancient DVD-era HD master when they released their disc just weeks before Kino's. People wondered how they could have gained access to Kino's new master for a release that would pre-date it, and they were right to wonder, in the end.

The Lost Weekend
The KL disc again uses a new 4K master from the original negative. The Eureka disc (released 8 years earlier) uses an ancient DVD-era HD master, which also has really severe crushed black levels. The one reason, for a while, to get the Eureka, was the 3-hour doc on Wilder, "Billy, How Did You Do It?" but the recent Criterion release of Double Indemnity has the doc, making the MoC Lost Weekend disc at last totally unnecessary.

That said, the Kino release of The Lost Weekend is far from ideal as well. The audio is mastered at a much lower volume compared to the Eureka disc and the English subtitles go out of sync starting around the 91-minute mark and stay that way for the rest of the film, which was an easy deal-breaker for me.

As for the Kino audio, it sounded fine to me once I turned the volume up.

Unless a viewer requires English subtitles (and I appreciate that some do) the KL is a huge improvement over the Eureka for many consumers.

I just checked my Kino Lost Weekend disc to see what the issue with the subtitles is.

They're not perfect, but I didn't find it ruinous to the movie. They're not word-for-word subtitles, they leave out bits here and there, but I checked an earlier scene, and that was also the case.

Around the 91 min mark of the 101 min film they do go about a second or so out of sync with when people start talking, but most of the time they stay onscreen through the dialogue, because the lines are a bit lengthy.

The best way to describe it is that, every time Milland and Wyman speak, exchanging say a dozen lines, the first subtitle comes onscreen about a second before one of them speaks. However, it stays until it basically catches up with them, and then the next few subtitles usually match the onscreen speech, more or less, because there are usually two subtitled lines onscreen at any one point. Again, not perfect, but it's not like they're consistently many seconds out of sync.

And, again, the difference in image quality is enormous between the two discs. I'd hate to see someone choose the Eureka over the KL only for the subtitle issue. It's not really that bad and only affects the final ten minutes of the movie.

Eureka has done everything in the Kino Lang set except the first 4 silents, 2 of which are in SD. I agree with the prior poster - in every case, to me, Eureka is superior - in PQ and extras. That being said, the Kino is definitely serviceable and is significantly cheaper than getting all the individual Eureka release. But if you want the absolute best transfer/release, then to me there is no comparison.

I love Kino, but not for their treatment of silent films. Sometimes they are the only ones release some silents, but when I have a choice I always pick Eureka.

Also, I prefer Eureka's version of Lang's sounds film, too.

Just my perspective.
