Default Possible Television Firmware Upgrades

This is probably a dumb question but is it possible to get firmware upgrades from manufacturers on TV's

I have a KDS-R50XBR1 which native res is 1080p however the hdmi can only support 1080i and upconvert to 1080p through cinemotion. Thought maybe Sony had some sort of Firmware upgrade possibility.

One of the reasons I bought the Philips.

I asked Vizio tech support the same question. Turns out their TV could have used a little update. The tech guy told me in these words. "These TV's are designed to last 10 years and get thrown out. They don't do firmware updates on them."

Which is utterly stupid! A really nice TV could be improved by further tweaking the firmware. I have seen and heard of stuff that needed firmware updates before the days of "flash" memory. It's a nightmare for both the tech and consumer.

Flashing your own firmware is not a chore, it is progress! In the old days you either lived with it, or paid for the update. In most cases you lived with it because there was no firmware update available.

Vizio are cheap and disposible, that's the entire goal of the company

The "last 10 years" part is probably an exhaggeration though. Try 3-5

I myself got a firmware update on my Samsung. It didn't fix the problem, because I think the TV is a lemon. It's still under warranty though, so I might be getting a replacement soon.

This will likely seem like a stupid question, but how does one update the firmware on the television set, itself?

It's not like the TVs in general have discs slots or whatever (that I've seen) to make this possible.

The samsungs have USB ports on them, plug in a flash drive and you can patch the firmware.

depends on the TV. my SXRD has a USB port on the back labelled "Service Only" which i assume could be used for firmware updates. although whether firmwares are even available to the consumer is another story.

I would say at this point that most recent tv models have some sort of firmware upgrade. But rarely are these advertised publicly and are usually only meant for service personnel at authorized repair centers. I know my tv had a firmware update you could get off the manufacturer's website to improve the digital tuner for instance.

Default Pretty standard on my sets

It's pretty standard on my sets.

Of course I own an Olevia 542i 42" Set, and an Olevia 247TFHD 1080p 47" Set.

I've updated my 542i, but I have not updated my 247TFHD yet.

My 46" Sharp has a USB service to upgrade the firmware. I tried to update it with a firmware file I downloaded but it came from the factory with that one installed already. Oh well, I probably wouldn't even be able to tell if there was a difference. I just love the T.V. how it is!

I just did a search on the Sonyusa website and didn't see any upgrades available for your particular model.

Sony has had upgrades for other models, so it's not out of the question, but I doubt they would have the one you're specifically asking for, which seems to be an extensive upgrade. I'm sure they'd rather you just buy another set (which, as a proud owner of an XBR4, I highly recommend. Great TVs).

Default Upgrade

I have the 60" version of that TV. Don't think its upgradable, its a limit of the chip in the TV. I output 1080i from my PS3. Picture looks fantastic.
