Arrow Steve McQueen on Blu-ray

Steve McQueen on Blu-ray

Inspired by the many fine threads I've seen serving as guides to a particular star's works, I decided to create my own such guide for the King of Cool himself. Below are all of the Steve McQueen Blu-rays currently released (or coming soon) in North America. Let's use this thread to keep track of releases, discuss the discs and any differences between various releases, and pay tribute to one of the coolest actors ever, whose career sadly didn't last as long as it should have.

I'll do my best to keep the list updated. If I've missed anything or you have any questions/suggestions, let me know.

1950s

1960s

1970s

1980s

COLLECTIONS

MISCELLANEOUS

Unreleased on Blu-ray:
- Girl on the Run (1953) [uncredited]
- Somebody Up There Likes Me (1956) [uncredited]
- Never Love A Stranger (1958)
- The Great St. Louis Bank Robbery (1959)
- The Honeymoon Machine (1961)
- The War Lover (1962)
- Soldier In the Rain (1963)
- On Any Sunday (1971) [himself]
- An Enemy of the People (1978)
- Tom Horn (1980)

I need to upgrade The Cincinnati Kid and am still waiting for a proper re-release of The Great Escape.

Nevada Smith would look ravishing in HD, I reckon.

I didn't realize until now that there wasn't a thread dedicated to Steve McQueen's work on the forum. I had to search just to verify but didn't find one. I am really surprised that he didn't have one until now, considering how popular he was/is.

So far I have seen four of his movies: The Cincinnati Kid, Bullitt, The Thomas Crown Affair and The Getaway. Watching Papillon, The Towering Infero and The Great Escape are on my "to-do" list.

Obviously any of his work not currently on blu would be appreciated, but I really want a copy of The Hunter. I think the DVD is out of print as well. Fond memories of watching that one when I was a kid.

Just recently re-watched THE GETAWAY. I barley remember seeing it years ago but remember liking it. Well this time I was loving every second! I need to catch up on more if his films but I think THE GETAWAY makes a strong case as to way that man is considered the king of cool. He is so bad ass and commands your attention like no actor before or after. He truly was an original.

I watched my old DVD and then watched the commentary the next day which is great as well. I went to buy the Blu-ray but I think it's lossy audio so I'm going to wait until the mood strikes me again to either buy the current copy or hopefully a newer remastered one with Lossless audio.

Highly recommend THE GETAWAY to all!

Yeah, I searched a number of times to make sure before I created one and couldn't find an existing thread.

I rented The Hunter on Google Play about a month or two ago and the HD looked pretty nice. Unfortunately, it's one of I believe three McQueen movies that Paramount has so we may never see it on Blu-ray.

Thanks for creating the thread, OP.

Also, on a related subject, two McQueen-related films are coming out soon.

Chasing Bullitt

Finding Steve McQueen (This one obviously has a much more tangential connection.)

I saw the trailer for Finding Steve McQueen last month but was disappointed to see the movie actually has nothing to do with him. Chasing Bullitt looks interesting, though. Hadn't heard anything about that one yet.

Hell is for Heroes and Nevada Smith remain two of my most wanted titles. Does any boutique label have an active Paramount deal?

Eureka currently do. They could potentially release them as they (correct me if I'm wrong) both were never released by Paramount on DVD in the UK. Paramount have a weird rule where a lot of titles are off-limits if they released it on DVD themselves (Criterion has really been the only one to crack this).

There's a great documentary called Steve McQueen: The Man & Le Mans that I've watched a couple of times on cable TV. Some chilling scenes near the end of the film where Chad McQueen, Steve's son, is being filmed while standing near the track in a grassy area. As the race cars scream by off camera Chad describes his Dad's love for the place and how just the sound of the cars was so special to him. Very moving.

Thanks, I knew some label had released titles in the past.

Both Hell is for Heroes and Nevada Smith received Paramount DVD releases in the UK. They sit on my shelf, taunting me

Guess I'm gonna watch "The Great Escape" again tonight.

Agreed, this movie without a doubt needs an upgrade/4k release.

i can't think of one actor who could play his part equal to or better than Mr. Cool himself. James Garner and the rest of the cast were outstanding too imo.

Thank you for this thread !! For fans of McQueen, while not a blu ray (unfortunately) this is a great documentary that concentrates on the last few years of his life, retiring at his peek because he was fed up with Hollywood and the movie star life, his soul searching during his semi retirement, his going back to work with a new attitude and then finding out he was ill. His wife and friends who were with him through all of this are interviewed. It's interesting to hear about this part of his life and it made me respect him even more, which I did not think was possible. He had a rough start and led an amazing life. I highly recommend it...

I would love to see The Hunter be released. McQueen and the cast make it so enjoyable. The hospital scene is priceless.
