Default New Unproduced Kubrick Project (from Frank Darabont & Ridley Scott)

The Shawshank Redemption and The Mist director Frank Darabont is Working with Producer Ridley Scott on Unproduced Stanley Kubrick Project

Quote:
“I spent the last year writing a script. And I know when I’m hitting on all cylinders or not. I was hitting on all cylinders,” Darabont says on the latest episode of Post Mortem with Mick Garris.

“It’s a magnificent project based on a treatment that Stanley Kubrick wrote in the late ’50s—an incredible Civil War piece. It’s a very meaningful script and [when] I finished, I said, ‘This is the best thing I’ve ever done.’ And we shopped it around town and we didn’t get a single meeting.
Quote:
This problem isn’t unique to any single filmmaker, Darabont adds, but is endemic to the industry at large. Not long ago, he ran into Rob Reiner (whose Castle Rock Entertainment backed many of Darabont’s landmark Stephen King adaptations), and said, “‘Rob, do you know what the hell’s going on in this business?’ And he goes, ‘No, no. Not a clue.’ We’re all shrugging. It used to be that there was a place where you could go and somebody was willing to put their reputation, their job, on the line to get a movie made because they believed in it. That doesn’t seem to be the case anymore.”

Of course, it isn't a remake or based on a comic book.

Comments like these are the reason people are ashamed to say they like comic book movies.

I think this is Downslope the film about the Mosby Rangers that Kubrick wrote with historian/novelist Shelby Foote.

There is lots of information around for this project and a lot of people have tried to get it made -

https://www.theparisreview.org/inter...8-shelby-foote

I wonder one of the problems is that Hollywood today will not produce a film about Condereates or a film that shows Confederates in an even slightly positive light.

Maybe that is why this film will never get made.

Last year saw the release of News of the World, which has Tom Hanks playing an ex-Confederate soldier.

I haven’t seen the film. Ex might be okay. Does it portray any of his confederate philosophy or confederate mission?

The Kubrick script would portray both. It is about Confederates attacking and killing Union soldiers.

Well, no, because Tom Hanks can't play villains, unless it's The Ladykillers and look how that turned out.

Uh, maybe Darabont is having problems shopping his project because he's sued AMC over working conditions, etc. on The Walking Dead.

If you look at his bio on IMDb, he hasn't really done anything in the last 7 to 8 years.

The last time I heard his name in the media, he had just bought Bernie Wrightson's pen and ink artwork of Frankenstein for a $1,000,000 a year or so ago.

I'm sure a studio like A24 or Neon would love to take a project like this, but are Darabont and Scott able to make the movie is a budget of $10 million or less?

Paul Thomas Anderson's the true successor to Kubrick. Let him do this.

Then it ain’t a fair comparison.

And my post is a good working theory - Hollywood ain’t gonna make a movie that portrays the Confederate cause. Not because they have principles, lol we know they don’t, but because it would be bad publicity for them.

Kubrick has no real successor. PTA makes very different kind of films with a completely different film grammar.

Some people said Nolan was the successor to Kubrick and I laughed at the suggestion. Kubrick would abhor Nolan’s film.

I thought maybe some European directors like Haneke but I think they go in the opposite direction and are true nihilistic even for Kubrick.

Love how people always say Kubrick would love this. Kubrick would hate that. Kubrick wouldn’t want that. None of you all knew him. You don’t know what he would you wouldn’t like.

The only thing I think I can say is, “Kubrick would’ve loved to have lived longer”

I think Kubrick's favorite movie of the past 20 years would have been The Hangover Part II.

Sure. But you can make an educated guess about what he would like or dislike. Just like you could make an educated guess about anything.

On Kubrick's favorite films: Stanley Kubrick, cinephile

Apparently he liked White Men Can't Jump.
