Default Netflix's Arcane

Anyone watching this excellent show? Discovered it on Netflix recently and really like it, even though I'm not really a big animation fan. The animation style is just stunning and beautiful, it's epic, and the story very engaging after the first couple of episodes (note: I never played League of Legends and knew nothing about it). With shows like this and Love, Death & Robots Netflix is really hitting it out of the park in the animation genre ...

It's crazy you posted this, as I just started watching it myself last night. I'm five episodes in.

It's even crazier that there wasn't a thread for this made beforehand -- at least not one I could find when using the search feature.

I don't know anything about LoL lore either. Like at all. But as a series, this show absolutely is stunning. Not just in terms of narrative structure and character depth, but both the art style, and especially the animation, isn't just great or next level, but could actually be a revolutionary step forward for the medium itself. I was blown away to find out that it's not entirely 3D animated. The stuff they did with this series should hopefully be adopted by other studios. I can't even imagine what Japanese animators and studios could do with a technique like this.

I really like this series so far.

I watched the first episode just to check out what it was all about and found myself totally sucked in. It's the look of the show that appealed to me at first, it's like some gorgeous concept artwork come to life, but the writing is really good. I think some reviews have been overselling it, but this show creates a complete world and made me care about everyone.

(Except for Jayce.)

I know nothing about League of Legends, and fortunately that doesn't matter at all. Between this, Invincible, Masters of the Universe and Lower Decks, 2021 has been a stellar year for adult animation.

You nailed it. The stunning animation is what pulled me in, but the story and characters make me come back. Can't wait to get back into this fantastic world and see the remaining episodes.

For some reason I had never heard of this show before (just stumbled on it in Netflix).

Some of the season 2 episodes of Love, Death & Robots were similarly amazing as Arcane (although they obviously didn't have time to develop characters and build a world in the same way).

This is pretty much one of the greatest animated series ever. They've taken a super colorful and cartoony video game and turned it into what can almost be described as an epic greek tragedy.

I have zero interest in LoL and this show doesn’t change that, however this is probably the best show I’ve watched this year. Everything about it is exceptional, from the storytelling, characters, animation, and camera work. Absolutely loved it.

While I don’t know much about the game or how far character arcs go, I do hope that moving forward that the writers don’t feel too stilted by where characters have to end up to where they are in the game. Or at least hope they move passed it. Just not a big fan of the fact that if you know what characters are in the game, then you know they can’t die in the show.

Watched this when the whole season released. Finished it in 2 days. Top tier television. Adored it throughout.

I have watched all episodes now, and what a show. Every single episode was great. Epic, captivating, sometimes heartbreaking.

Fortunately season 2 is already in the works. Unfortunately it won't be ready before 2023. I also hope we'll see more from the French animation studio that is responsible for the fantastic animation.

I'd kill for a 'Metal Gear Solid' animated series done with this animation technique but with Yoji Shinkawa's art style.

Absolutely loved the first season of this series. Sucks the next season won't arrive this year, but they can take all the time they need to put quality first.

Hands down the best show of last year for me, animated or otherwise. Around a week after I finished binge watching it, I binge watched it again. And I rarely re-watch television series.

Any chances of this getting a bluray release relatively soon?

I don’t have much more to add other than what’s already been said. This show is some of the best drama/action/storytelling I’ve seen on television in years. I just finished it and, I don’t think I’ve said this about any show, I want to watch it again immediately. Giving this thread a bump in the hopes more people find this show.

I'm quite surprised how short this thread is considering the quality of the show. If anyone has any doubts it's really rather good and hope there's a season 2 in the works.

I'm surprised too. It's one of the best things released last year, yet everyone would rather go talk about some new Star Wars show they hate. Quite sad how this passed under the radar here, but at least those of us who watched it all agree it's fantastic.

I only started watching it because the art style reminded me so much of Dishonored, but the story, voice acting and use of music were all excellent. Very impressed

Arcane won 9 (!) awards (all it was nominated for) at the Annies. Well deserved.

The first part of Riot's 5-part behind-the-scenes series has dropped. The episodes will be released weekly on Youtube.
