United Kingdom Lars Von Trier's The Kingdom Trilogy (5 February 2024)

Nice.

THE KINGDOM I
Strange things are happening in the underbelly of a Danish hospital in Lars von Trier’s long unavailable, cult TV phenomenon The Kingdom I – a wickedly funny supernatural mystery. Let the battle between good and evil commence!

THE KINGDOM II
Picking up in the immediate aftermath of the first season’s startling cliffhanger, The Kingdom II sees the troubled hospital plagued by the rise of a greater evil. Masterfully harmonizing mordant humor and poignant pathos, Lars von Trier’s TV phenomenon scales new heights of white-knuckle suspense.

THE KINGDOM EXODUS
Lars von Trier returns to the world of Denmark’s most famous haunted hospital with this dazzling limited event series. Set in the run-up to Christmas, The Kingdom Exodus serves an incomparable blend of the nightmarish and the absurd as it beats a compulsively entertaining path towards the promise of Armageddon.

Special Features:
In Lars von Trier's Kingdom' Documentary
Behind the Scenes - Interviews with Lars von Trier and cast
TV commercial for the Danish newspaper Ekstra Bladet - Directed by Lars von Trier
28-page booklet

I'll have to start saving for this. It will be a blind buy, I do like surreal stuff.

You're in for a treat. It's a quite "Lynchian" dark comedy/horror. Swedish actor Ernst Hugo Järegĺrd is also a treasure. I haven't seen the third season though so I can't vouch for that.

Really? Is this noted by the BBFC yet? Can't seem to find it myself.

Any reviews out there yet with tech specs?

HMV just dispatched mine today but not sure if I should open it or not when it arrives as I will likely return if it's not at the original 25fps.

DVD compare says Riget (aka series 1) is CUT by 5 seconds (not sure which episode) due to animal violence. Not sure about Riget 2 (aka series 2) as nothing is listed for series 2 in UK on the site.

I wouldn't go by that for the upcoming BD as that looks to be a very old DVD release and they don't appear to have the Second Sight version on there for comparison (I've no idea if that was also CUT). I've tried looking on the BBFC site but can only find the Second Sight classifications from 2011 and nothing more recent.

I would assume these discs will be based off the exact same MUBI streaming masters already released so do we know if those are CUT?

I only watched the show for the first time a few months back so I don't know the history of any different versions.

Mine just arrived from HMV. Comes in a sturdy outer chipboard outer box which was a nice surprise.

I haven't opened it yet but the specs on the back state 1080 25i so hopefully that is correct. All looks good so far, lets hope the encoding is good too.

1080i is great news. Will be interesting to see how they’re handling this for the US set. I’m tempted to order the UK one now but the US version is obviously the cleaner looking one without the rating logos. FWIW the German Plaion set appears to be 1080p according to the back cover.

I hope you can share your thoughts on the encoding soon. MUBI is currently on a streak of excellent encodes and releases.

But did we ever get a confirmation how this was filmed? Even if the first two seasons are indeed in 1080i I can't imagine they still did this for season 3.

So, what's 25i mean here? I thought that was usually for things shot on video, and to my understanding, this is mostly shot on 16mm?

It was shot on 16mm film at 25 fps for European TV broadcast, not the US 24 fps speed.

The progressive 25fps can be split to 50fps interlaced for European TV broadcast so no speed change, however would need slowing down for US TV.

For BD 50fps is allowed as a format, 25fps progressive isn't allowed, but you can make it like that by duplicating every frame so 50fps looks like 25fps.
