I did a spit take when I saw this was in the Cohen catalog about five years ago.

While I well remember the release of the VHS, the first time I saw it was in an actual theater.
I went for the bewbs, but keep coming back 'cause - for what seems like a cheap wink wink/nudge nudge flick- it's quite entertaining and well done.
The characters are all sharply drawn and there's an air of neo-noir fatalism wafting through it.

I've had a grey market DVD for years whose PQ isn't bad, but it'll be great to watch this again on a big screen.

The Cohen trailer looks to be a major upgrade over the region 2 DVD.

I frame skipped from 1:38:48 to 1:38:50 and there's no glitch. Now a couple times during this scene it repeats the previous second or so of action but nothing out of place.

Yes same here. No glitch. Review is wrong and I almost didn't buy!

From what I saw in comparison to the old VHS it is identical other then the tremendous upgrade.

Now lets have the Joy of Flying next!

Neither am I, especially when they cover up the tits. Good thing on Cohen titles pressing pause and slow mo causes the subtitles to disappear. Someone let us know if that's the case here.

I went ahead and ordered this and just finished watching it.

The subtitles are "burned in" to the video - in other words, the disc doesn't have a subtitle track. The subtitles are part of the video encode.

My impression of the disc is that Cohen did the bare minimum here. You get the film in HD on Blu-ray. The print has noticeable scratches and reel change marks in addition to the burned in subtitles. The subtitles have several typos. The only extras are trailers (and there are an obnoxious number of trailers you have to skip through when you first load the disc - you are locked out of going to the menu).

The movie itself was interesting. I had seen Valerie Kaprisky in Andrzej Zulawski's A Public Woman. Paolo Eleuteri Serpieri has stated that he based his comic strip character Druuna on Kaprisky, and it's not hard to believe. She is very beautiful and apparently quite uninhibited (at least in her younger days). She's constantly stripping off in this movie (along with practically every other female in the cast). Her character is actually something of a villain, delighting in the way men (and women) are attracted to her and making sure they are punished for it.

I would give the movie 3 out of 5 stars and the Blu-ray a 2 out of 5. I've seen worse, but there is definitely room for improvement. I guess this is one of those titles where we should just feel lucky we got a Blu-ray at all.

Can anyone confirm whether Cohen's release of Year of the Jellyfish is region free or locked?

I've trawled every review online and even found the back of the box on an eBay listing, and nobody mentions whether the disc is Region A locked.

Yeah. The only thing they seemed to have put any effort into is trying to force number of previews at the beginning, disabling the menu button, (have to skip forward a number of times) and disabling auto-resume, so if you stop the movie, you can't start back up at the same point.

I like the movie, though. That Chris, what a sociopath!

Signed up for a free one week trial on Cohen Media Channel (Amazon Prime) just so I could view this movie for free. Pretty good movie. Played it with subtitles off since you get subtitles anyway. With subtitles on you end up with double subtitles.

Not buying the Blu-ray. I'd definitely take it on 4K if they did it right though.

One odd thing about the movie. No clue how she got off the boat. Seems like it would have been a long distance to swim. And the jellyfish would have gotten her.
