Sony Pictures Classics will be releasing American Movie (1999) on 4K UHD for its 25th Anniversary on October 15th.

My all time favorite documentary. Never gets old. Day 1, very surprising this is getting a 4K release.

Wow. This is most unexpected. It didn’t seem like it would ever even get a Blu-ray (that release took forever), and now this! Good thing I didn’t get around to buying the Blu. This 4K will be mine.

Very nice announcement. I wish I would have held out on buying the blu-ray but oh well. That being said, if this movie can get a 4K release then anything non-Disney/20th Century Fox can get one too.

I hadn't heard of it until the Blu-ray was announced a couple years back, but really high praise for it in that thread and elsewhere, with many saying its their favorite documentary.

Very surprising. I bought the Blu on release, but was bummed it was missing the Coven short film from the DVD. Looks like Sony worked out a deal with Borchardt as it's listed on the specs for the 4K.

Woah, I thought we were lucky to get this on blu ray, but 4k is nuts. Definitely one of my favorite documentaries.

This wasn't a bucket list release because I never even considered it would happen! Happy to buy this for the 4th time. Not just a favorite documentary, but one of my favorite movies period. Endlessly funny and quotable while being depressing, uplifting, inspiring, and melancholy all at once. It's a tremendous achievement.

I'm very happily surprised by this too I was thinking Criterion had it and that's why it was taking so long.

I was just watching this on Prime and was blown away at how good it looked. Must have been a new transfer right? Also I had never seen it and really liked it.
