On December 23, 2020, the film was announced for a limited run in Japanese theaters beginning January 8, 2021 under the title Evangelion: 3.333 You Can (Not) Redo. This version of the film contains a variety of updated visuals meant to better align it with Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time.

https://www.khara.co.jp/2020/12/23/eva_imax/

Replacement is only a minor correction for each cut, and there is no change in the story.

2018 "EVANGELION: 3.33" 2K conversion project started in earnest. In producing "Shin Evangelion Theatrical Version", the environment inside the studio color photography department was raised, and under the full supervision of Director Hideaki Anno, all cuts were re-photographed in 2K full size. Different from ": 3.0" and ": 3.33", higher-definition images that could not be expressed at that time were realized.
The IMAX® screening will maximize the appeal of the further evolved "Q: 3.333", which has undergone some retakes along with the re-shooting.

There is no separate IMDB page for 3.333, but I am hesitate to enter the disc under 3.0 on here. Anyone have any thoughts?

Take a look at the separate DVD listings in the Blu-ray.com database for Evangelion 1.01 and Evangelion 1.11 (which are both based on the same Evangelion 1.0 theatrical film) and follow whatever precedent it gives in terms of formatting the entries for 3.333's BD and UHD releases.

I tell you what, as much as we take the piss out of George Lucas for continually tinkering with his films he’s got nuthin’ on Evangelion!

I know you're joking, but still it's worth noting that the original versions of the Eva TV series, Death & Rebirth, and The End of Evangelion are all readily available on reasonably modern disc formats (if only in Japan), unlike the SW OT which topped out with non-anamorphic DVDs using craptacular Laserdisc masters which have been OOP for many years.

And the altered/updated versions are always clearly differentiated by title. A UHD disc of A New Hope isn't even the same cut that showed up on Blu-Ray, let alone VHS or the GOUT DVDs, but you'd never know that from the marketing or the back of the box.

Yeah, Lucasfilm has been pulling that crap ever since the VHS re-releases of the 1997 Special Edition versions back in the year 2000. Absolutely no mention of it being the butchered SEs and not the originals.

Oh indeed, but does that still excuse them not being able to leave Evangelion alone, ever?

No. And to make matters worse is that fans much prefer the original Television series as opposed to his Rebuild films. I have a hot take; the Rebuild films shouldn't even exist...

Regardless of however one regards the Rebuild films (personally I'm OK with them), I think that we can all agree that it's a Good Thing™ that the original TV series (as well as "Revival of Evangelion" aka Death[True]² & The End of Evangelion) will be back in print by year's end.

It's been just about a full decade since ADV Films' "Platinum" DVDs went OOP, while Manga Entertainment's Death & Rebirth and The End of Evangelion DVDs went OOP a couple years before that. That's way too long for such an important series to lie dormant.

Sold my Platinum DVDs and the Manga double pack on fleabay recently, looks like I did it at the right time.

I don't think most anime fans born after 1999 even watch those older shows. Most of the discussions I see in anime circles are of shows and movies made in the last ten years; actually, mostly the last five years. The new movies are scored pretty high on MyAnimeList, where the original show has just as many haters.

I never really had any urge to watch the movies. The show was satisfactory. I too wish the director would use his short life to tell new stories.

Good job! The going rate for them on eBay isn't going to increase by any significant amount between now and whenever GKIDS' Blu-ray set gets released (in fact, D&R / EoE's prices have been dropping a bit) so liquidating them now before the market collapses is a smart move. The proceeds should more than cover the cost of the GKIDS Blu-rays.

I recently had the same thought in that I just sold my set of 13x dubbed VHS tapes this past week for about $200 net (after eBay fees & shipping costs), but I've decided to directly reallocate those funds to buy the Japanese "Standard Edition" BD box in order to complete my checklist of owning at least one version of each of the major Japanese releases.
  • Original broadcast version ("Archives of Evangelion" DVD box)
  • "Video Format" version (1997-99 DVD singles + "Panasonic Dream" Special Disc)
  • "Renewal" version (2003 DVD singles + "01 Test Type" DVD + "Renew Special" DVD sampler from March 2003 issue of Newtype Magazine)
  • Blu-ray (2019 "Standard Edition" box set)
Of course I'll pick up the GKIDS set as well so that I can complete my checklist of digital (i.e. non-VHS/LD) US versions to match:
  • "Perfect Collection" version (2002 box set + the original unremastered "Collection 0:1" disc done by AIX)
  • Pre-"Platinum" Director's Cut version ("Resurrection" and "Genesis Reborn" DVDs)
  • "Platinum" version ("Platinum Complete" thinpak box)
  • Manga Entertainment DVDs of D&R and EoE
  • Blu-ray (GKIDS box set)

I did the same. No reason to hold onto them now that we know a Blu-ray is on the way. ADV dub being included or not doesn't matter to me, same with the ED being changed out or intact.

I do care about the ED being intact (as it still bugs me that the Ghost in the Shell's 4K UHD uses that dumb "One Minute Warning" piece for the ED instead of "Chant 3" even on the Japanese audio track), but I agree with you when it comes to the dub's unimportance.

To me, the myriad versions of "Fly Me to the Moon" used in the ED credits is a big part of the Eva TV experience and hopefully they won't be dropped due to licensing issues like they were with Netflix's streaming release.

Rebuild is
[Show spoiler]an excellent sequel sequence
, and
[Show spoiler]3.0 is my favorite of it.
The final film not withstanding, since there's no easy way to see it yet.

BTW I think the details for this release simply means it's all been recomposited and that's what they mean by "rephotographed."
That's not really Lucas-y tbh.

Even though I prefer the series, I certainly would get the rebuild movies in 4K if English was an option beyond ripping the disc and adding subs.

There's a non-zero chance that there could be an English-freindly UHD of 3.333, as Neofilms/Deltamac (who currently handle the Rebuild releases in Hong Kong) put out an English-subbed 4K disc of "Your Name" a couple years back and GKIDS/Shout! (who currently handle the TV series + 1997 films in the US) put out a UHD for "Weathering With You" last year.

Of course it would depend on if Khara wanted to license out the new 3.333 version (on UHD or even at all) and if the potential licensees thought they could make a profit in distributing such a release, but at least all the relevant parties in this scenario have the technical capabilities to make something like that happen.
