Question Best / strongest animated 3D films

2013 Golden Globe

Best Animated Film

Winner: Brave
• Frankenweenie
• Hotel Transylvania
• Rise of Guardians
• Wreck-It Ralph

Interesting that all the animated film nominations were theatrical 3D releases.

Personally thought "Rise of the Guardians" should have won.

I have only seen 2 of the 5 nominations which were Brave and Fankenweenie. Between those 2, I would give Brave the nod.

Wow a 3D film win's a Golden Globe. That's a shot in the arm for 3D.

Yeah, but it ended up being Brave, so shows you what they know.

agree Rise is way way better in animation, 3D depth and story.

Saw this. Disappointed that Wreck-It Ralph didn't take home the trophy - it was my favourite from that bunch.

My pick would have been Frankenweeine based on PURE BIAS on my part, lol

But....I do think (all personal bias aside) that Rise should have won.

I missed the show. Thanks for posting the winner.

Of those, ROTG and WIR I saw in 3D. Of those two, I enjoyed both, but would buy ROTG for the 3D first, which was awesome. WIR had a better twist in the story that saved the movie for me, though I enjoyed the adventure of ROTG a bit more.

I saw Brave and honestly I didn't think it was that great maybe be I was expecting the next Toy Story, Toy Story 2 or Ratatouille.

It was the film they gave the Golden Globe too, not the 3D, this changes absolutely nothing.

Question Best animated 3D films

What is the most interesting use of 3-D in animated films? in which animated films is 3-D applied as a storytelling tool?

I have

2004 The Polar Express
2007 Beowulf
2010 Tangled
2011 The Adventures of Tintin
2012 Brave
2013 Frozen
2014 Maleficent

I enjoy animation up to a point, and at my age that point has been reached. I prefer real people in real environments. But there might be something interesting out there in terms of 3-D that I'm missing.

Feel free to just list your choices, and if you are inclined the reasons for them.

I won't repeat what you have said film wise (though maleficent is largely a live action film), I would add The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast are two must check outs (I have yet to see Little Mermaid in 3d) along with Coraline (a genuinely great film that few to seem to have seen). I'm sure there are many others as well.

Other greats include:
Ratatouille (not originally intended but very effective due to it enhancing the size difference between the rats and humans).
Up (nothing brilliant about the 3d, but it does enhance one of my favourite films)

To me, the "best" depends on what you are looking for... strictly picture, storyline, etc. But I think the following (in no particular order) are all great 3D movies...

Rise of the Guardians
Legend of the Guardians
Coraline
Kung Fu Panda 1 and 2
How to Train Your Dragon 1 and 2
Hotel Transylvania
Madagascar 3
Up
Walking with Dinosaurs
Tangled
Christmas Carol
Polar Express
Open Season
Monster House
Thunder and House Magic
Turtles Tale 1 and 2
Croods
Turbo
Epic
Mr. Peabody & Sherman
Despicable Me 1 and 2
Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 1 and 2
Frozen
Beauty and the Beast
Lion King

IMO,

1953 (10 minute short): Walt Disney's Melody, teaches the principles of Music.
It was noted to be the first cartoon filmed in 3D, and shown at Disneyland in Fantasyland.

Couple of other animated gems great in 3D (shorts, not movies):

- I Tawt I Taw a Puddy Tat (Sylvester & Tweety), bundled with 'Happy Feet Two' 3D BD
- Rabid Rider / Fur of Flying / Coyote Falls (Roadrunner & Coyote 3D cartoons)
- Get a Horse! (Mickey Mouse), bundled with 'Frozen' 3D BD
