United Kingdom Dracula (1931)

Hi,

I used to have the DVD of this movie, which I was sure had the Philip Glass music soundtrack in 5.1. On the Universal Legacy version, it only seems to be in stereo. I am remembering inaccurately?

Thank you.

You are right that the DVD's had the Philip Glass alternate track in surround (5.0). Maybe in hindsight the studio felt that it was distracting, since they had to balance it with the aging original dialog/FX track of the film, and felt that it sounded more balanced in stereo. I remember one of the reviews complaining that the Glass score felt too disjointed from the film's audio track.

Or it could be just a case of them forgetting that it was previously in 5.0 and assuming that audio tracks on a talkie film of this vintage cannot be surround.

Great response, ravenus. It's good to know my memory is still somewhat intact, and I think I will be on the lookout now for a cheap DVD of Dracula to restore what I had.

Very interesting. I love Philip Glass' work but I can't properly hear the dialogue over the Glass music so I can't really watch the movie with it, preferring to stick with the original score. I have both the old dvd (from legacy collection that included the busts) and the blu ray collection but I didn't notice any difference between them in terms of addressing the clarity of dialogue.

I had clear forgotten that I haven't not got a copy of this film on DVD; I remembered that on my shelf I have the giant 2004 figurines/'Van Helsing' era boxset, so obviously sitting there that I couldn't see it. I'm currently ripping the movie with 5.1* as we speak...

* 5.1 is what it says on the packaging, but it may indeed be 5.0.
