Default A Stronger Alliance Between Apple and Sony?

I realize this is anecdotal, but I just got back from the extremely nice shopping mall built near my house this year, and noticed something surprising.

The official Apple store had only Sony LCDs on display.

The official Sony Style store had only Ipod MP3 players on display.

I know Apple didn't announce much about Blu-ray yet, but maybe this is a sign of things to come?

its been like that for years at my apple store. I think its because the sell computers and computers generally use LCD screens and Sony makes the best LCDs which helps show off their computer even more.

What else is Sony going to sell? Zunes I mean the Ipod is the only MP3 player worth selling unless you are a big box retailer or another company who doesn't make any mp3 player.

Corporations get into all sorts of strange alliances. Toshiba produces the Cell broadband engine for Sony's PS3. Microsoft implement's Sun Microsystem's Java environment into their Internet Explorer browser. Universal HD carries Blu-ray commercials. The list goes on ad infinitum.

I wouldn't read too much into it. Apple and Sony may compete with Microsoft on separate fronts, but that doesn't necessarily make them allies.

Don't read into it.
It is just another one of those corporate deals to help each other out.
Apple IS on the board for Blu-ray, and they openly said Blu-ray has won. We will see Blu-ray drivers/burners on macs soon enough.

So Sony was not selling their own MP3 players ?

this is so stupid, what wouldn't happen in the US, a SONY store selling Ipoos? ARE you kidding me? SONY's own MP3 walkmans are so much better why wouldn't sell their own? I dont believe a word of that!

This is why I was so shocked. I would never have guessed that Sony Style would offer Apple Ipods, or the Apple store would offer Sony LCDs.

It struck me as very stange, and prompted the creation of this thread.

Were the iPods for sale, or were they just part of a display of the Sony iPod speakers etc.? Sony makes iPod speaker docks etc, and I could see them having iPods in them for a display, however I can't see a Sony Store being an authorized Apple reseller.

I know that Apple stores in Canada use Sony displays for Apple TV etc...but I think they are courtesy of the Sony store in the same mall.

Likewise Sony uses iPods to display the iPod accessories they have available.

If they are actually selling each others wares that would be something I haven't seen before.

Yeah I wouldn't read too much into it, though if there was to be an alliance it would make a lot of sense. Sony and apple both has VERY similar business plans and ideal worlds, just think.

Both sony and apple:

*Like higher quality, more expensive products
*Like all-in-one media products
*Like proprietary formats (i.e. SACD, m4a, aac)

I dunno, I think given the HD DVD saga, apple siding with sony would be a wonderful thing.

this needs to happen now!!!!

The only way to get a BD drive in a mac is through an non-sanctioned add on through www.fastmac.com

problem is it voids the waranty. Apple needs to start offering the BD read write drive as an option.

Apple unfortunately has gotten into the HD download business just like Microsoft. Hence why I suspect that their "support" of Blu-ray will be half-hearted at best if they ever do announce anything.
