BAZ BAMIGBOYE: Director Sam Mendes has James Bond back in his sights after Skyfall's phenomenal box office success

Bond has never been bigger, thanks to the phenomenal box-office success of Skyfall, directed by Oscar-winner Sam Mendes.

And people have been asking whether he will return to direct the next one, known for now as Bond 24.

He had initially been reluctant because screenwriter John Logan was planning to write a two-part story that would have been shot back-to-back, which would have taken four years out of the director’s life.

It would have meant long stretches for the cast, too - led by Daniel Craig, Ralph Fiennes as the new M, Naomie Harris as Miss Moneypenny and Ben Whishaw playing Q.

That plan has been jettisoned, and Bond 24 and 25 will be stand-alone pictures.

Mendes hasn’t firmly made up his mind about directing another Bond, but I’m reliably told he’s ‘75 per cent’ of the way towards doing it.

At present, Logan’s thoughts for Bond 24 are in the form of two treatment papers outlining a rough idea of the plot.

So, in theory, Mendes is on board, but wants to see the finished script before he fully commits.

The only people who have seen the Bond 24 blueprint are Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson (the extraordinary producing duo behind the 007 franchise), Mendes, Craig and a handful of key executives at Sony and MGM.

Once everything falls into place, pre-production on Bond 24 could start late this year or early 2014, though Mendes couldn’t work full-time until he has finished directing Simon Russell Beale in King Lear, which opens at the National Theatre next January.

Meanwhile, the director is putting together the musical version of Roald Dahl’s Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, which begins performances at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane on May 18.

Skyfall triumphed at the EE British Film Academy Awards by taking best British film, while composer Thomas Newman won best original score.

In Los Angeles, cinematographer Roger Deakins collected the top honour at the American Society of Cinematographers for his work on the movie.

Would definitely like Mendes to return for another one. Nothing confirmed of course, but I like the thought of him returning.

Hell NO!

After boring dumbfest that Skyfall was I don't want to see this director anywhere near this franchise. I loved CR, I liked QoS, but here, oh my... it was like kick in the balls. The fourth one in 2012 (first three being Prometheus, The Dark Knight Rises and Expendables 2) and the most painful one.

Go away Mendes, leave Bond alone!

Did you mix up Quantum of Solace and Skyfall when watching them?

Skyfall is one hell of a stunning movie with some amazing set pieces and great performances but so much of it seemed pretty stupid, which is a shame because there's a great movie in there.

Skyfall was amazing and I was very happy with Mendes' work on it. I don't, however, want him returning for the next one -- I want another director to have a go and see what they come up with.

Another Bond like Goldeney or Casino Royale? Yeah, certainly enticing. Though Mendes coming back might mean Deakins returning as well. Which ultimately means either would be cool in my book, though:

...^this^ would be great, considering it's a long-running series and there's no real 'ownership' on that front. Much like Star Wars or what I'd like to see happen with Batman, let's get as many creative directors to give their takes on the material as possible.

Exactly - it's never been one man's show (although some could argue Campbell has been a more important link than others in the continuing success of the franchise) and it would be nice for it to be kept that way. Mendes made an incredible Bond, but let's not try and build it too much on "from the director of Skyfall" and make Bond 24 more about the character again.

He made the best Bond film he could make. Now someone else should take a shot at it with their unique approach.

This.

I am all for Mendes returning. I am more interested to be quite honest on who the new villain will be and even better, who's going to portray him/her?

Not exactly, the franchise stuck to a select few directors up until The Living Daylights. Since Goldeneye, all of the following films have had a different directors (aside from Casino Royale, which was the same director for Goldeneye). I would say switching it up constantly is bad for the series, as the films that followed Goldeneye progressively weakened. While Skyfall was a fun film, thanks to it's many homages and throwbacks to the franchise, it's no match to Casino Royale.

Terrence Young - Dr. No, From Russia With Love, Thunderball

Guy Hamilton - Goldfinger, Diamonds are Forever, Live and Let Die, The Man with the Golden Gun

Lewis Gilbert - You Only Live Twice, The Spy Who Loved Me, Moonraker

John Glen - For Your Eyes Only, Octopussy, A View to a Kill, Living Daylights, License to Kill
