Default MPAA has become increasingly irrelevant.

There was seemingly endless controversary in the 80s and 90s, but not nearly as much in the 21st century. But there's still weirdness and biases.

The Conjuring and Paranormal Activity franchises have no business being R-rated.

Movies that are R-rated just because of a few f bombs.

Indies that get slapped with an R-rating because of brief full frontal, but a star-studded studio romcom like "Something's Gotta Give" containing a full frontal scene is PG-13.

I agree. Every movie should be see at your own risk or peril. Why not?

Just to educate you, it is the MPA not the MPAA that is responsible for film rating system.

The MPA rating system is a voluntary scheme that is not enforced by law; films can be exhibited without a rating, although most theaters refuse to exhibit non-rated or NC-17 rated films.

MPAA has never been relevant. Just the fact that they dropped that “A” shows how stupid these people are. Horrible Fascist like organization. And individuals or movie theaters who care about ratings or censorship should also seriously rethink things.

You're right! I don't have an agenda, unlike yourself which reads more like a crusade.

My wife and I are adults, and there aren't any children I have to look out for, so a movie's rating means absolutely nothing to me. Hell, it took me a few months to realize they are using graphic language on commercial TV shows.

In this internet age, it’s something that could be done by various pressure groups (family organisations, religious groups etc). The film could just be released unrated and they could write their reviews, warnings etc and put them online.

They can seem quite odd at times. I remember one warning of “statue nudity” in The Phantom Menace, but if parents have concerns about swearing, sex etc they could consult them rather than a vague MPA rating.

It's totally a scam and a rigged and bought system by studios.

It has zero credibility.

It is so vague as to be totally pointless.

In the age of the internet does it even matter? I'm not a parent
[Show spoiler]yet
but if you were unsure about a movie being appropriate for your kid something like the parent guide on IMDB would be more helpful then some arbitrary letter score.

It's so helpful seeing "thematic elements" in a rating.

I'm a child of the eighties. I saw horror movies (my favorite genre) cut to pieces to appease the MPAA. But times change. The moment a dude's d!ck was snipped off with garden shears, and tossed on the ground to be eaten by dogs in the R-rated Hostel 2, the statute of limitations for b!tching about the MPA(A) officially ran out.

They serve their purpose, and as long as Deadpool can celebrate International Women's Day, there's no point in complaining. Doing so doesn't make you edgy, it makes you 20 years too late.

No, that's actually the official reason for the PG-13 rating:

Quote:
TITLE: 3 Ninjas Knuckle Up (1995)
RATING: PG-13
CERTIFICATE #: 33156
REASON: Rated PG-13 for non-stop ninja action.
DISTRIBUTOR: Tri-Star Pictures
ALTERNATE TITLES: Three Ninjas III

That has to be the most unintentionally hilarious rating reason I've ever seen!

Twister is still my favorite.

Quote:
The MPAA rated Twister PG-13 for intense depiction of very bad weather.
