Default DTS-HDMA vs. Uncompressed PCM

Now that PS3 is getting updated with DTS-HDMA, could anyone really notice a difference between DTS-HDMA and Uncompressed PCM.

No...its the exact same bit for bit....it just takes less space. Thats why to companies like using it.

The PS3 will only output dts-ma tracks as either lossy dts-core 1.5 Mbps tracks or as Uncompressed PCM converted from dts-ma.

I don't think there is a disc with both PCM and dts-ma on it that would allow you to compare.

dts-ma = lossless
PCM = lossless
Dolby TrueHD = lossless

I wasn't exactly sure I understood the question, but since the PS3 will convert the DTS-HD codecs to PCM anyways -- it'll sound exactly the same as if the receiver was doing the decoding. The receiver just won't show DTS-HD or whatever...they should sound exactly the same if that's what you're asking.

What's the whole point of coming out with DTS-HD if no one will notice a slight difference in SQ. I'm not saying I don't care for it, I welcome the new option.

I'm confused...

Right now when the PS3 sends out DTS, it's the lossy 5.1. With DTS-HD coming on, it's going to be uncompressed (not lossy) -- it'll blow what we get from DTS right now completely out of the water.

ya guys, what we currently hear from dta hdma on the ps3 is LOSSY (meaning some sounds/artifacts are lost) and we are not hearing MASTER audio (or how the audio was intended to sound with every pin drop)

with the update, dts hdma will be converted to PCM (which is LOSSLESS) meaning we hear every pin drop

so your question doesnt really make sense since with pcm tracks you hear pcm and now with dts hdma we will also hear pcm since its converted to it

i think thats right, someone correct me if im wrong

DTS-HD MA uses less disk space.. Sounds the sames as PCM.

Maybe he's asking if we already can do uncompressed PCM (like it comes on some discs -- the 5.1 PCM) why do we need another codec that will be converted into the same thing we already have...?

Not sure -- maybe doesn't understand that 5.1 PCM, and something coverted to PCM don't necessarily sound the same (like how DD 5.1 and DTS 5.1 don't).

I'm not really sure what's being asked...sorry.

Yeah, that makes sense.

It probably is just a question of why use DTS-HD when you can just throw a PCM track on there.

That'd make sense.

And it's good for us -- less space used on sound means more bonus goodies should they so choose.

Not when comparing the two, since the PS3 will be converting DTS-HD to PCM. However, it is still necessary if there are movies that offer DTS-HD tracks but not PCM. The update ensures that you will always get high quality audio as long as it is offered on the disc................I think.

Be aware, that when the DTS HDMA signal is sent via PCM, its not converting anything. PCM is a way of sending a signal, which will already be decoded by the PS3. So you are in fact listening to DTS HDMA

Thanks for clarifying. I am happy with the update but I have a question. If the DTS-HD signal is merely being decoded by the PS3 versus my Onkyo, I should not notice any difference if it was bitstreamed instead right?

Well, first, I am not totally sure the ps3 is going to be able to bitstream the DTS -HDMA, buuut, if it does there shouldnt be a difference. In my own opinion, id rather have the receiver do the decoding, since that is what a receiver is for..... Ive also heard rumors that if the ps3 decodes, the sound is "quieter" than when the receiver decodes, but i have no proof of this and shouldnt affect sound quality.

I beleive if you mean dtshd-ma that the ps3 still will not bitstream it but there is no need or loss in quality because the ps3 will do the decoding something i think no player on the market right now can do

You put the issue to rest then ignited it again. Edit your post and remove that portion and I will convince myself that it was never there. HURRY!
