Default Will the Superhero Bubble Burst?

The Marvel Cinematic Universe may have come to and end (at least for a little while), but superhero movies are still being released on a regular basis. This brings up a very good question: will market saturation kill the superhero genre? There are only so many comic book adaptations people can take before they say "Another superhero movie? Hard pass!"

Maybe not soon, but eventually. Similar to how westerns, musicals, slashers, "found footage", romcoms, etc. all had their time in the sun before over-saturating the theatrical marketplace. Not to say they can't be popular ever again afterwards, but everything reaches a peak at some point.

Maybe sometime in the next 10 years there will be enough bombs and flops for the studios to stop producing them in such quantities, but as long as they make money, they'll keep making them. No one stays on top forever. Even the MCU will eventually fizzle out. I feel like post Endgame, they'll lose a lot of interest from mainstream audiences since Iron Man and Cap are gone.

When did that happen? 3 movies this year, 2 next year, 3 the year after that, plus a metric shitton of related programming dropping on Disney+ over the next couple years. . .

Yeah, I was wondering the same thing actually.

Hell, I'll probably see Black Widow alone 2-3 times in the theater.

I would say as long as studios keep their quality high enough for the majority of releases, audiences will consistently come back for more. It's a formula that works really well and done well is a licence to print money.

I would say its not gonna probably end at least for another decade. Maybe we might see the popularity start to wane by the 2nd decade if studios have mined and done all the worthwhile adaptations and can't make original stories for live action.

In my opinion it can't die soon enough. The art film has been lost in favor of these retreads of superhero movies that make a gazillion dollars because appreciation for quality film-making has sadly declined. I know everything comes down to money, but it doesn't mean I have to like what results from it (in this case quality films trying (and often failing) to out-muscle or grab any market share from the 62nd worthless superhero movie that no one will care about in 10 years).

The movie business is a neverending cycle of disruption. So yes, the bubble will eventually burst, it always does. Comic book movies may last a bit longer thanks to corporate consolidation eliminating the competition but we're probably talking a decade at the top give or take (from now).

It doesn't seem like an either/or situation to me, though. At least in my area (the greater Detroit area), that simply isn't true.

And people like Malick and Soderbergh wouldn't even be here if what you are saying were true, if all anyone ever made and distributed were the next Spider-Man or Avengers movie.

We’re in a strange time where any underperforming film is hailed as the end times for whatever it has been contextualised for being to suit whom ever’s narrative.

The end times of Westerns and other genre staples are historically debated and documented, where as currently everyone is trying to predetermine the next casualty. Of course the “Superhero bubble” will burst, but I believe people are calling for an end to the MUC more than the genre in totality. The landscape itself has changed drastically over a decade, from the X-Men and Sam Raimi Spider-Man movies, to Nolan’s Batman films, now to Marvel’s interconnectivity and it looks like the next step is to throw caution into that. With DC’s films ingrain universe in wreckage, with only bits and pieces being taken forward and other aspects entirely reworked and rebooted, and a harder R slant. Where as Marvel itself is moving it’s eggs now out of one basket with it’s TV and entertaining the prospect a differing timelines and universes.

In the way I think most people interpret the bubble bursting, yes, Marvel movies will eventually die out. But in the way that Batman and Robin apparently killed off Superhero films in the late 90’s, they won’t just end. I think we’re just on the brink of a turning point, and as things get contextualised quicker and conclusions are drawn more prematurely, we can see these micro-cycles perpetuating for a very long time.

Actually, probably not.

But seriously I really do like the character, and I love Scarlett, so I really will most likely see it multiple times.

This is whilst also avoiding more mainstream stuff like Us, Midsommar, Jojo Rabbit and Ad Astra. People are free to add more to this as we go on as well.
