Greetings fellow OCD collectors (at least I am hopeful I'm not the only one)
For those of you who have region free equipment (Usually goes without saying for most active blu ray collectors out there, as one thing you learn early on is that generally speaking it feels like Region A gets shafted more than any other when it comes to high quality limited edition releases) I would like to point out the German Mediabook market (Not to be confused with Digibooks, which most Region A collectors know all too well). Mediabooks are type of book style edition released for the most part almost exclusively in Germany, and while yes all the content in the book (aside from some of the best photography of behind the scenes content I have seen in high end releases) there is still many reasons for English speakers to consider entering this world. The production quality on these releases are Fantastic, nearly every release is a number limited edition and we are talking low numbers here. Most releases have 3-4 variants (Which is simply different cover art). Each Varian will have a certain number of releases with some variants being rarer than others. For example Cover A will be limited to 666 copies, Cover B Limited to 333, and Cover C limited to 222. This is pretty much standard practice all across the German mediabook genre. Would also like to add that I have yet to come across a non english friendly release, that being said you need to be reasonable. Don't buy a japanese film from a german publisher (mediabook or otherwise) and expect by default to have English subtitles or dub track. In MOST cases non english films will NOT BE ENGLISH FRIENDLY. Be sure to check before you order. As for films that were filmed in english originally, you should have absolutely no concerns. I have yet to come across a film that does not include its original audio track or force non english subtitles on you (Films from france are horrible for this). I welcome you too look at my collection for some examples (will provide links as I now sort my collection based on production company rather than style/type which makes my collection very inaccessible for casual browsing). My Capelight Collection (Largest by far, I only have 1 or 2 titles from each of the other companies but they all have been fantastic) Wicked-Vision ALiVE (Only Kids is a mediabook in this list, but they are all films sourced from Germany. Note that one title in there is Non english friendly, Berliner Ballade. It was a case of them sending me one by accident. A happy accident that I may check out one day when I learn fluent Deutsch) Ascot Elite Just Bridge Nameless Media (Note: Maniac Vintage Edition is not book based packaging, but a Limited Edition digipack with significant bonuses/material. The German blu ray market is filled with so many gems. I add more German releases to my collection every month than English ones now.) Uncategorized Mediabooks (2 currently) This is just the top layer of freezing moisture on the end of a single snowflake arm on the top layer of snow accumulating on the edge of a snowdrift that has been slowly growing on the tip of an iceberg. You get the idea SIDE NOTE: In the process of revamping my collection categories, so the above links likely will not match the publishers listed any longer, that being said everything I stated in this post still very much stands. The quality of imported blu rays often exceed the region A variants and I recommend buying German specifically when possible. Last edited by jee; 11-09-2021 at 01:13 AM. |
