Default What if HD DVD conceded during the Superbowl!

The writing is on the wall. Blu-ray is the clear winner everywhere on earth. There is no way HD DVD can recover. It has been losing support everyday since the WB's announcement.

A classy way for Toshiba, Paramount and Universal to end this ordeal would be to use the Superbowl ad to announce to the world that they are ending the format war and will embrace Blu-ray as the only HD format. This would give Blu-ray a tremendous boost against DVDs. In the same AD, they could offer an alternatives to existing HD DVD supporters to migrate to Blu-ray.

I know the chances of that happening are nil but such a graceful gesture would put back Toshiba, Paramount and universal in the good grace of the customers.

You know.. you are right! I would have the utmost respect for them after all if they did that. It would be an amazing way to announce it!

A friend of mine once told me : "I appreciate your optimism, however I do not share it". As much as I would like them to concede, I only think it will happen after stores stop selling HD-DVD products.

I know it will not happen. The HD DVD backers will keep on crewing up innocent customers as far as they can.

I'm just saying it would be an honorable way of ending the war. Of course, they would have to offer existing HD DVD supporters some kind of deals so that they don't feel betrayed. Toshiba is already throwing millions at a dead format.

HD-DEAD will not give up until the bitter end. The Super Bowl commercial will only prolong the inevitable. Toshiba knows that the scent of death is upon it, and they are barely keeping their head above water. They should just put HD-DVD out of its misery, that at least would be merciful. If Toshiba keeps up this irrational behavior, they will lose everything, destroy themselves. I know some people say that they wish Toshiba would fold, so that HD-DVD would go away. But I will say, I don't want Toshiba to go out of business, I just want them to realize that there can only be one HD format, and it is Blu-Ray.

HD-DVD will desperately try to sell itself during superbowl... what would be awesome is if Spielberg and Michael Bay buy the next 30 seconds after HD-DVD and they'd be like for 30 seconds

Of course they're not going to concede anything, but I do wonder what the content of the ad will be. As others have pointed out, they probably reserved and paid for this slot a long time ago. I wonder if the ad they planned to show 3 months ago, is the same as the one they're actually going to show?

I'm sure the BDA would be more than happy to foot the bill for such an announcement...

Again, I know it will not happen but it still would have been a very honorable way to get out of this hole that the HD DVD backers are digging further with each passing day.

Because of this war, I have sworn that I would never buy a Toshiba product in the future. The only thing that could make me change my mind would a graceful capitulation from the HD DVD backers.

I doubt they will concede defeat at superbowl, but it would be funny if para or uni announced neutrality or blu exclusive during superbowl.
i would laugh my a$s off if that happens

The only way I could plausibly envision Graffeo or Kornblau "conceding" in anything resembling a mass public arena event would involve running out onto the field with bombs strapped to their chests during halftime--
Frankly, that's the only scenario under which I could envision them conceding to Blu at ALL.

(Similarly, one would be prudent to advise Sony's CEO not to take in any plays at Ford's Theater any time after May...)

Maybe Toshiba, with the purchase of any HD DUD player, will offer a FREE VOUCHER for their upcoming Blu-Ray player

Knowing Toshiba is losing money the coupon would be for "100 off" their next overpriced player, lol.

Toshiba also ran an HD DVD SuperBowl ad last year and the BDA did'nt...
look where they both are today:

HD DVD is in shambles and Blu-Ray is victorious.

You can see Toshiba's 2007 HD DVD Superbowl ad over here:

hXXp://www.superbowlads.us/2007_superbowl_ads/index.html
(replace XX with TT... the url would'nt show for some reason...)

Last year they ended the ad with "Toshiba HD DVD... so real, you can feel it"

Maybe this year it will be "Toshiba Upconverting DVD... you can almost feel like you're watching Blu-Ray... almost..."

Such hopes are on the same level as the predictions by the other side of secret new technologies that are supposed to re-invigorate the dead format, mentioned elsewhere on this forum.
