Default Chiba goes Blu

Not a peep here about the Sonny Chiba double features released on Blu. I suppose some argument could be made that it is pointless to convert cheaply made exploitation films to Blu, being that they will never be up to par from a PQ or SQ perspective.

Still, from a film buff's point of view, it's really cool to see that someone is going to the trouble of preserving these movies and creating the best quality versions of them that they can. 'Killing Machine' and 'Sister Street Fighter' are both hugely entertaining films and classic examples of Chiba-san's brutal dramatic style. The B films on each disk are a lot of fun too and you can't beat the price of 15 bucks for 2 full features.

Anyway, to my fellow lovers of crazy psychotronic cinema, I encourage you to support these titles. As more of these smaller companies start going Blu, we will hopefully see more of these titles on the market.

Viva Exploitation!
Viva Chiba!

I've ordered them with FOX movies (to safe on shipping costs yet avoid import taxes) so I haven't seen them yet.

So can you comment on the PQ/AQ?

Lots of grain, lots of cracks and dirt in the film, but still probably better looking than these films have ever been. I'm guessing these movies are the same source as those in the Sonny Chiba collection that Image released a few years ago. Much better than the public domain versions. On the plus side also, the films are complete, unedited and the colors pop, especially the blood, of which there is a lot.

Killing Machine is like a Chiba greatest hits flick, containing scenes similar to many of his other movies, but still a lot of fun in it's own right. Shogun's Ninja is a fun fantasy movie too, despite the awful inappropriate disco porn soundtrack.

Sister Street Fighter is the real find here, an awesome movie where so much happens, it's hard to know where to begin, but you will not be bored. This is one crazy flick. I think this is easily the best this film has ever looked, despite everything, and there is even a surround sound track for all the screaming and grunting.

If you keep an open mind and appreciate these films for what they are, I don't think you will be disappointed.

Now if only someone would restore the original Streetfighter movies.
