The Big Short Blu-ray
Quote:
Paramount Home Media Distribution has announced the Blu-ray release of The Big Short. Nominated for five Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Editing, the critically acclaimed film features an all-star cast including Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling and Brad Pitt. The Blu-ray/DVD/Digital HD combo pack arrives on March 15th.

Based on the best-selling book by Michael Lewis, The Big Short details the true story of four outsiders who risked everything to take on the big banks during the greatest financial fraud in U.S. history. Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling and Brad Pitt deliver career-best performances in "the most wildly entertaining must-see movie of the year" (Toni Gonzales, Fox-TV).

The Big Short Blu-ray Combo Pack with Digital HD is packed with over an hour of bonus content. Go behind the scenes with Ryan Gosling, Steve Carell and Christian Bale as they talk about their characters and the real people in this unbelievable true story, then discover the facts behind the gripping events as author Michael Lewis and the filmmakers discuss how the most incredible heist of the century was pulled off. Plus, catch five deleted scenes that were not shown in theaters and hear director Adam McKay reveal the challenges he faced in bringing the book to the screen.

The film is presented in 1080p with DTS:X surround sound.

Extras:
  • In the Tranches: Casting
  • The Big Leap: Adam McKay
  • Unlikely Heroes: The Characters of The Big Short
  • The House of Cards: The Rise of the Fall
  • Getting Real: Recreating an Era
  • Deleted Scenes

Was hoping for a McKay commentary, maybe Paramount will give us a retailer-exclusive bonus disc with some extra goodies on there. Would love a featurette dedicated to the editing of the film, and perhaps a short documentary on the actual crisis itself.

Day 1 one for me. One of the best of the year, and deserving of every single nomination it has received.

This is a pretty great movie. I do think Spotlight was better put together but I am more interested in the content here. Just trying to decide if I should buy or not.

Didn't it seem like both Bale and Carell were playing the same neurotic, slightly autistic character?

Not really? The characters felt like complete opposites in my opinion with Bale's being more reserved rather than straight up assertive.

I really enjoyed the film, but I'm not sure if I'll have a desire to rewatch it much. That being said, Christian Bale gave a phenomenal performance as a man struggling with himself over his actions and comes across as incredibly endearing.
[Show spoiler] The scene where he begins to come to terms with the fact that he may have made the wrong move when he's questioned by one of his workers stands out as the highlight of the film for me personally.
One of the problems with the film from my perspective is that I never really connected with any of the other characters quite as much as I did with Michael Burry. So while I enjoyed my first viewing experience, and learned a lot on the way, I don't see myself rewatching it often for entertainment or thematic analysis purposes.

It's a great film, and one that everyone should see, but unless the special features are outstanding I think I'll be passing on a purchase unfortunately.

Yeah. It seems like a lot of dramas, and for some reason especially Oscar contenders, usually fall into the 'watch not own' category...

I can't say I agree with that as I've purchased an embarrassing number of Oscar nominated films. It just so happens that this one comes across as a thoroughly informative (and entertaining) description of a complex issue, but one that I don't really see myself revisiting often.

There's just something about it that keeps me at arm's reach and I'm not sure I was onboard with Ryan Gosling being used as narrator at points, especially considering that I found his character the most difficult to "relate" to and he ends up having the least amount of background to help latch onto.

Great film. Pretty depressing though. Excellent acting throughout, but Bale and Carell were definitely the stand-outs.

So, like real life then?

Day One for me since I missed it in the theater. I love the cast, am endlessly interested in the subject matter, and honestly the trailer for this is one of my favorites of recent years (and yes, I know, trailers mean jack).

There's just no way I wouldn't own a movie with this cast.

Does anyone know what the Target exclusive packaging difference actually is? I can't to find what is different. The pic of the slip on this site and Target's appears to be the same.

I was thinking about it but I'm not really sure how many times I will realistically rewatch it. There's not really any special features worth mentioning so I might sit this one out.

Because of that Target slipcover (and Cartwheel) I might end up getting it tomorrow. But if the slip is plentiful then I'll just go back to waiting for a price drop.

Will probably pick this up at Target tomorrow with cartwheel although honestly I think I prefer the original slipcover, perhaps in person it will look better.

Target slipcover:

[Show spoiler]IMG_3407.jpg

About 15 at my store, between checkout lanes and media section. Didn't see any standard slipcovers. The case art underneath the slipcover is the standard art. Didn't end up buying it though. Will wait for a price drop.

It's ridiculously busy, but I actually think I like the Target slip more. I'll be picking that one up. Plus the word "exclusive" is just too hard to resist.
