Disney Disney's Post-Revival Era

Something that I've been thinking about a lot lately, but do you think there have been a new era at Disney for a few years now?
I know that when people discuss eras, they usually mean the animated films, and if we look at the new animated film of the recent years: Ralph Breaks the Internet, Frozen II, Raya and the Last Dragon and Encanto... They are not really on the same level of quality as their predecessors: The Princess and the Frog, Tangled, Frozen, Zootopia, Moana, etc... I think that the thing that really established this new era is learning that Musker and Clements left for Warner Animation.

But it's not just the animation studio, we can see this new era affecting other aspects of the company. The Revival saw the releases of the DAC on Blu-ray, but now it seems that they are focusing more on streaming and they don't really care about home media anymore (they've barely released anything on 4K for example).

If during the Revival, the remakes were more sparse and were more about giving a new take like Alice, Maleficent, Cinderella and The Jungle Book. Now they are more shot-to-shot and more frequent.

I don't really follow park news, but I understand that there have been changes there as well, and for the worse.

So what do you think? Are we at a new era?

I’ve always liked Ralph Breaks the Internet and think it unfairly gets a really bad wrap. Frozen II did not land with me at all the first time but has grown on me, and Raya landed with a great big thud in my eyes. And in general yes the Walt Disney Company in my opinion has become an out of control monster that financially fleeces and emotionally manipulates its fans and their nostalgia for their childhoods. The decisions being made in their filmmaking and their theme park industries are not good ones and reflect a desire to flee from creativity and take the easy way out of milking the same properties over and over and putting profits over people every time.

So yes, we’re in a new era. We’re in the Era of Sucking.

I'm not a Disney hater as anyone can see from my collection and posting history. This is a genuine question.

Bear in mind: Lee is a Disney "cheerleader". Like hardcore. Brush off any silly comments for best results.

I’m a huge fan of the original Disney animated classics and some of their original live action films. But, their live action remakes have been mostly awful and entirely unnecessary. I don’t want "new takes" on classic, perfectly good stories and characters. I’d rather they come up with new stuff which they have sometimes but not enough. I’m also more of a fan of discs as far as owning content since streaming prevents actual ownership and that doesn’t sit well with me. Disc quality is also better and probably always will be. If you don’t hold it, you don’t own it. And they can’t change content on discs you own versus streaming. So, I don’t like their attitude towards physicals discs. That’s my opinion.

They’ve done some OK things with Star Wars but also have butchered some of it too. It’s a mix of good and bad with Star Wars.

I agree with what you are saying Farerb.

I feel like you are referring specifically to Walt Disney Animation Studios.

This thread will quickly spiral into SW and MCU discussions.

Just a sign o' the times.

But I really came here to say that it can be hard to define an era until you're looking back at it.

I noticed a difference around the time Tangled came out.

History will probably point to Frozen as the start of this era in Disney Animated Features.

I haven't seen a lot of the recent animated films from Disney but Zootopia was the last memorable one I think. Ralph Breaks the Internet and Frozen II were okay. To be fair, besides Wreck-It Ralph and Tangled it feels like there weren't that many great movies after the classics. I do expect them to make another great movie in the future.

Two that unexpectedly floored me were Moana and Coco.

Actually two of my favorite movies.
