Microsoft Offers $44.6B for Yahoo

Microsoft Makes Unexpected $44.6B Offer for Internet Icon Yahoo

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Microsoft Corp. has pounced on slumping Internet icon Yahoo Inc. with an unsolicited takeover offer of $44.6 billion in its boldest bid yet to challenge Google Inc.'s dominance of the lucrative online search and advertising markets.

The surprise offer of $31 per share, made late Thursday and announced Friday, comes with Sunnyvale-based Yahoo in a vulnerable position....

It's too bad. I'd left hotmail for yahoo, which works miles better for me. Will they axe Yahoo mail?

This is more along the lines of what I expect from MS: If you can't beat 'em, buy 'em out.

Default Microsoft is Buying Yahoo

This may be relevant to Blu-Ray and HD-DVD. Microsoft is buying Yahoo for 45 billion dollars. They are probably doing this to compete with Google and also provide HD content on the Web.

Great. Now my favorite search engine will start to randomly crash and otherwise screw up my computer.

Ohhhh, I doubt that very much. The most that'll happen is that you'd probably be able to access Yahoo mail thru MSN too if you want.

It'd be millions of people getting screwed out of accounts otherwise. Not good business.

lol

I am also worried that my email address will overheat.

Kidding aside, this is actually their only chance against the Google's online monopoly. And competition is good

Well it is a hostile attempt by Microsoft. There is a chance it will not go through. Hopefully Yahoo has enough funding to fight evil empire.

Technically they aren't buying Yahoo, they made an offer.

A buyout this size would require US and EU approval along with Board and stockholder's ok.

I kinda suspect EU would have a bigger problem with this then the US and it will take awhile either way.

I'm actually not unhappy about this! Especially since Yahoo screwed up the best music player in the business....namely MUSICMATCH. Their Yahoo version sucks!
