Dreamworks The Wild Robot (2024)

Quote:
“The Croods” and “How to Train Your Dragon” filmmaker Chris Sanders is returning to DreamWorks Animation with “The Wild Robot,” a new animated feature based on the New York Times best-selling book by Peter Brown. Sanders wrote the script and is directing the project.

Jeff Hermann is producing “The Wild Robot” and Sanders’ longtime creative collaborator Dean DeBlois will executive produce. No release date has been set. But you can still get very excited.

“The Wild Robot” follows Rozzum 7134 (“Roz” for short), a futuristic robot that washes ashore on a deserted island. From there, according to the official synopsis, “a tale of survival and discovery begins when she becomes the unexpected protector to an orphaned gosling, which she names Brightbill. Together they struggle to survive the harsh environment, but only succeed with the help of a close-knit group of misfit animals, who become first friends, then family. Ultimately Roz and company save the island from a robotic invasion by Roz’s manufacturer, looking to bring her back to civilization by any means necessary.”
Quote:
The synopsis says the film “tells an emotional story about how we all have the power to ‘exceed our programming,’ to become more than we were destined to be. Roz not only finds a way to survive in this dangerous world, but also brings new meaning to her ‘life’ by taking on the responsibility of parenthood. The movie celebrates what it means to be wild and alive, and how cooperation is the key to survival in a harsh world.”

Joining Sanders on “The Wild Robot” are production designer Raymond Zibach, a longtime DreamWorks Animation vet (his first movie was the traditionally animated “Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas”); editor Mary Blee (who worked with Sanders on “The Croods” and “How to Train Your Dragon”); and head of story Heidi Jo Gilbert, who most recently worked on the Oscar-nominated “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.”

Looks like a nice movie to chill out to. Could belong as an episode of Love, Sex & Robots

The epic adventure follows the journey of a robot—ROZZUM unit 7134, “Roz” for short — shipwrecked on an uninhabited island and compelled to adapt to the harsh surroundings, who gradually builds relationships with the animals on the island and becomes the adoptive parent of an orphaned gosling. The filmmakers describe the project as “a powerful story about the discovery of self, a thrilling examination of the bridge between technology and nature and a moving exploration of what it means to be alive and connected to all living things.”

The Wild Robot stars Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong’o (Us, The Black Panther franchise) as robot Roz; Emmy and Golden Globe nominee Pedro Pascal (The Last of Us, The Mandalorian) as fox Fink; Emmy winner Catherine O’Hara (Schitt’s Creek, Best in Show) as opossum Pinktail; Oscar nominee Bill Nighy (Living, Love Actually) as goose Longneck; Kit Connor (Heartstopper, Rocketman) as gosling Brightbill; and Oscar nominee Stephanie Hsu (Everything Everywhere All at Once, this summer’s The Fall Guy) as Vontra, a robot that will intersect with Roz’s life on the island.

The film also features the voice talents of Emmy winning pop-culture icon Mark Hamill (Star Wars franchise, The Boy and the Heron), Matt Berry (What We Do in the Shadows, The SpongeBob Movie franchise) and Golden Globe winner and Emmy nominee Ving Rhames (Mission: Impossible films, Pulp Fiction).

Interesting trivia and tidbits about the trailer:

-Lupita Nyong'o (voice of Roz) sung this trailer's cover of What a Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong
-The song for the trailer in particular was pitched by the director himself Chris Sanders in 2022

From Head of Story Heidi Jo Gilbert (also head of story on Puss in Boots: The Last Wish):
Quote:
A week after my mom passed, Chris Sanders offered me Head of Story on Wild Robot. He pitched a song for the trailer & I just cried b/c it was a cover of my mom’s favorite song we played at her funeral the week before. Emotional to see it released exactly as he pitched it 2yrs ago

Similar animation to Puss in Boots 2, right? (haven't seen that one yet though)

I like how it looks, but if it would have been more photo realistic I'd probably be more immersed into it.

This will now be releasing the same day as Paramount's Transformers One. If this doesn't get delayed (which it likely will, i'm thinking to October) then we could be seeing the fiercest animated competition since Fievel Goes West vs. Beauty and the Beast...

Smart to not release this the same day as Transformers One. Better 2 weeks after I think.

Wild Robot has potential, although not sure how the silent hero story will be of this robot. Maybe they're going for a Wall-E type film, where he discovers nature and the wilderness as a robot.

I'm guessing the 3D will be converted instead of natively rendered per eye/camera.

Hopefully it has plenty of depth to it. The Good Dinosaur was very good IMO, where the silent cavekid had to deal with the smart dinosaur lost and trying to find home.

Hopefully this is a lot more exciting than After Earth or 65.

Every time I watch the trailers for this, I just get goosebumps. This feels different for an animated film.

Don’t let me down Dreamworks.

Rewatching the trailer for Wild Robot, the theme of raising a helpless baby duckling and watching it grow safely under his robot protection to full age to migrate south, is revealed as a big plot point. The other animals grow to appreciate his help, as he helps them escape dangers cause by other invading robots.

I wonder if this has a paint filter over it like TMNT Mutant Mayhem.

A new trailer was recently rated by the Alberta Film Ratings board with a runtime of 2 minutes and 24 seconds, wouldn't be surprised if it went up online in the next week or two before Inside Out 2's release or timed to Despicable Me 4's international rollout

The concept of robots in the wilderness is interesting and has potential. The robot having traits of kindness and compassion for the animals, and fights against other harmful invading robots.

In Wall-E, he tries to help the zombie brained humans who have become very passive and allow machines to do all the work for them, even in the smallest of tasks. I haven't seen that film in a long time.

In I Robot, the robot knows the 3 rules, but tries to prove it's case with the help of Will Smith's character.

This reminds me of A Good Dinosaur. In that film, the kid Dinosaur becomes lost during the storm flood, losing his way home far away. He meets a crazed human kid, who kind of becomes his guide and helps raise him in some ways. They then learn to work as a team against the dangers to reach their goal. Good movie and takes place in photo realistic looking landscapes.
