UPDATE: The 3D Blu-rays arrived today Tomb Raider 3D and Despicable Me 3 3D. There is no Region code on the disc sleeves or slips. I only see the letters AD on both. I put both in my PS4 and they both started up fine. I guess the Tomb Raider 3D Amazon listing for the Region B disc is a misprint. The disc is really Region Free or I got a Region Free disc by mistake. Despicable Me 3 3D was the Region Free disc I ordered. What does AD stand for?

Other than the process to change BD from region to region being more complicated than those one button switches, I don't know anyone that have had any complaints. At least I'm assuming you're asking about something like this. https://www.ebay.com/itm/OPPO-BDP-10...-/160942653070 or http://www.ebay.com/itm/Oppo-BDP-103...t/162101335749 It's a bit odd that this 57.99 listing is now sold out since as far as I can remember this listing has been active for 7-8 years. The similar (identical) items listed as 93 or 203 seem to be exactly the same other than the price. Hopefully the cheaper version will be relisted at some point. I think the $69 listing is the exact same item. I think I got my second one for a 103D for $52 on a "MAKE OFFER" last year and had one for my 93 since 2012 Last edited by hariseldon; 01-19-2020 at 06:43 PM. |

I'm not sure the external/internal version is still available and certainly not at $50.
I know the Ebay seller was still selling them at around $150 recently, but I think they said they were down to a "few left" though I never know if that's legit. 220 Electronics is selling the Internal Only plug in (no soldering) for $80-90. It's an extremely simple install and takes far longer to remove the screws to the Oppo than installing the MOD. There's an existing header/plug and you simply plug it in and secure the circuit board with some double stick tape where ever you want to keep it safe. The 103D header is in a different location than the regular 103 -- it took some help from the locals for me to find it on mine, but I think that post/pic is still in one of the OPPO threads I have teh Original Int/Ext combo and decided I wanted it inside rather than hanging off the back of the player. On a scale of difficulty 1(easy)-10 (difficult), it's a 1.5 for the 83/93/103/203, a 2.5 for the Darbee just b/c it took a while to find the instructions, but a whole different situation for the xx5 models https://www.220-electronics.com/regi...ation-kit.html EDIT: Found the Ebay listing https://www.ebay.com/itm/12142545806...AAAOSwQItUA9zD And the discussion about the 103D internal install starting around post 4180 https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...7#post16223317 and a pic of the headers -- CN21 MCU DEBUG is the key install header https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.p...postcount=4200 Last edited by hariseldon; 01-13-2022 at 05:39 PM. |

I watch a lot of old movies. In the US they're expensive. The European market has them much cheaper, but they're Region B. My Sony player will not play them.
I finally looked online and found a bunch of sites that tell you how to hack your player, and make it Region free. Unfortunately, most say the hacks won't work on Sony. A new Region Free player is over $100. Which for me is a lot of money. I'd eventually save it with all the films I buy. But, to spend $100 is hard for me to do. I went to one of our 15 neighborhood thrift stores. They had a Samsung 3D DB-5500 used in the box with remote for $20 with 50% off. If it didn't work, I have 7 days to return it. Samsung's you can hack. I got it home, set it up. I didn't have to hack it. I put in a Region B movie and it worked GREAT. I'm going on a old movie spending spree. |

That's a nice bit of good luck. Downunder it is Region A disk that are the problem. My only mulit-region player failed me but I have a son who can fix anything he puts his mind to. The only problem is he does not put his mind to enough. Anyway he managed to get a compatable replacement blue laser from China and got it going again. Gives me access to those region locked kino 3D re-releases.

Which discs has the Samsung been able to play that the Sony couldn't? Virtually no US Bluray players are hackable (for BD) without some sort of hardware mod. Many of them can be modded fairly easily for DVD |

One other film I can't remember the name of. It's a thriller. A UK release I bought on chance at a flea market. |

I wish these companies would have gotten together and put out one standard disc that would play on any system, anywhere in the world. I have to buy Disney 3D from the UK now. But, I can't get the points to my Disney account. It's a rip. |

I'll assume the Samsung can play Region A locked titles -- most Criterions, Kino and Lionsgate though not 100%? I guess it would make sense if the prior owner hacked it in some way and left it in Region B mode. Curious and good fortune for you |

Back in Feb I wrote about buying a Samsung 3D DB-5500 at a thrift store and it played my Eureka Dr Mabuse and another Region 2 encoded movie without having to hack it.
I bought $300 worth of Powerhouse box sets and films in March. Since I preordered the Bogart set, my order just arrived on Friday. I put 20th Century into the player and it won't play. I put in Mabuse which did play in Feb, and it also wouldn't play. I looked online for ways to hack and basically nothing worked, till I tried a VERY EASY variation on one of the hacks. It has to be done for each film. EASY BLU RAY HACK 1) Put in the blu ray and wait for the screen to say "This is encoded for Region 2. Will Not play on this player" (That's not exactly what it'll say. But, you'll see the screen.) 2) Press STOP and TOP MENU at the same time. If it just stops, press Top Menu again. I did it for Mabuse, 20th Century and Sweet Charity. All worked like a charm. Powerhouse has real special features. Kinos give you practically nothing. The quality of 20th Century was excellent. It's great on the Samsung. I haven't tried my Sony. But, I'm told that Sony's are harder to hack. Samsung is supposedly the easiest. |

I have Eureka, Powerhouse and a few other Region B locked that play when I press the right buttons.
I bought The ToyBox from Tiberius Film and according to bluray.com it's Region B and it doesn't even say locked. But, I do the same thing for this as I do all the others, and it doesn't work. I've watched many other Region B Powerhouse blu rays since, and they're fine. What could this one disc have that's preventing me from getting in? Is there anything else I can try? I can't find this movie in the US, and I'm told by someone whose taste I respect, it's a decent horror film. I want to see this. I paid $13 for it. |

By pressing "the right buttons" are you referring to the Panasonic trick? If so, that doesn't always work.
If you want to be able to more reliably access blu-rays with a different region than your own, then you need to get a blu-ray player that has been modified to be region free. Also, if a blu-ray disc is assigned to just one region (A, B, or C) then that means that it is locked to that region. That's the whole point of listing the Region designation. Are you using a region free player? If yes, are you setting the correct region? Is your player with the most recent firmware? Is the disc scratched in any place near the center or with any water mark in it's surface? I've found a U.S. edition of it with seconds of search: https://www.ebay.com/itm/19515745520...YAAOSwxYpismsI |
