Default The Silence (2018)

Update: Now a Netflix film

Didn't see a thread for this. The Silence (2018) is an upcoming American-German Horror film from John R. Leonetti, starring Kiernan Shipka, Stanley Tucci, and Miranda Otto among others.

It's based on the 2015 book by the same title, which many believe was the original "inspiration" for Krasinki's A Quiet Place.

Trailer:

Book synopsis:

Quote:
In the darkness of a vast cave system, cut off from the world for millennia, blind creatures hunt by sound. Then there is light, there are voices, and they feed... Swarming from their prison, they multiply and thrive. To scream, even to whisper, is to summon death.

Deaf for many years, Ally knows how to live in silence. Now, it is her family's only chance of survival. To leave their home, to shun others, to find a remote haven where they can sit out the plague. But will it ever end? And what kind of world will be left?
No doubt many people will think this is just a rip-off of A Quiet Place when the movie gets released. Will post trailer when it's released.

Looks like Netflix got the rights to it, and are releasing it in April.

Anyone see it? I'd read the book and it was OK. I guess my main issue was the main idea of the film that the best person to be silent was someone deaf, and it was really well illustrated in the film in that the deaf person was the first to speak after being told silence was essential. I mean if something was attracted by noise, the worst thing I'd want to be is deaf, as I'd have zero feedback as to how much noise I was making, especially in the dark with no visual cues. I mean I could be walking over cowbells and I wouldn't even know it...

It's horrendous. I never really got into A Quiet Place as much as most folk, found it well executed and engaging enough to enjoy, but credibility was at breaking point for too many scenes to truly capture my imagination... However after watching The Silence I now consider A Quiet Place to be a peerless classic of this subgenre of post-apocalyptic survival horrors. This is without question one of the dumbest films Netflix has ever shat out onto the internet.

LOL!. The other thing that got back to me (also in the book) is the religious nutter. I mean about, what, 2 or 3 days into it, this religious cult has already gotten underway, organized, and up to no good?

Yeah there's absolutely no sense of time passing in the film, also
[Show spoiler]Miranda Otto's character had half her bleeding knee clawed off and within two or three scenes she was up and about walking without a limp. Presumably there had been some sort of time jump of a few days or even weeks.

Both The Silence and A Quite Place are ludicrous concepts. Movies can be made but they all seem very silly to me.

My reasons:

1. People talk/yell/snore in their sleep.
2. People fart, cough and sneeze spontaneously.
3. Babies cry and make noise.
4. Noise are made on toilet.
5. People fall, trip over, and knock over things. I suppose these can be avoided if their life depended on them . . .
6. Some laughs cannot be contained. eg. when you hear a lone, drawn out, high pitch squealing fart in a full church during Easter service . . . (I heard one and it was hilarious).

Deaf cannot hear but they can still make all of the above noises!

Could they not find an actress that knew sign language or at least just have her make up signs and try to act deaf. The deaf daughter did more talking and the family did most of the sign language.

I just started watching Chilling Adventures of Sabrina so decided to watch this in between episodes because of Kiernan. The actress who plays her mom in the movie, plays her aunt in the show. LOL

It wasn't THAT bad, I actually liked it except for the 3rd act when the cultist shows up. Some of the acting was sub-par (eg. 'Uncle Glenn') and the main kid just looked too much like Emma Watson. Some of the editing and was a bit shit though. Wasn't well-directed. And it felt like there was still a lot more to come. I liked the creatures more than the ones in A Quiet Place though.
