I have that one. It's exactly the same master / transfer as the Lionsgate. Much better cover though than the Twilight looking US version.

How would re-scanning the film print change the overall result?

I thought in this situation, there was was no negative or IP, which is why they scanned a film print.

And if you want to see how bad scanning a print looks, look at Shout's Dog Soldiers (who also claimed the negative was lost, then lo-and-behold the new 4K edition in Germany is scanned from the negative). |

Wouldn't it depend on what quality the film print is in? I'm pretty sure Death Weekend (1976) and Death Warmed Up (1984) are both print scans and they look ok because it's widescreen etc
In the case of silent night deadly night 2 (1987), the result is pretty bad because the film print used seems very faded and worn. What I wanna know is, if they upscale a DVD, did they just put it into 'final cut pro' and then set the output to "1080p", and used the programs upscaling algorithm to improve it? Can't people just do this themselves to improve dvd quality movies? I guess the original DVD would have to be in 16:9 and not 4:3, because that would create a cropping issue with a lot of info being lost. |

Am I right in my understating of 'upscaling'? It's just getting a movie editing type program to output the DVD files of a movie into 1080p right?

Can anybody who owns one of these German Mediabook releases do me a favour and check the audio pitch? I own multiple copies of this film from 3 different countries and every single one of the Blu-ray copies suffers from upwards PAL-style pitch shift, despite running at 23.796 fps rather than 25 fps like they would on a PAL DVD. The old Anchor Bay DVD is the only copy I own that does not suffer from incorrect pitch, despite being the only one that you'd actually expect to have pitch shift (given that it actually does run at 25 fps and therefore has a shorter running time).
I confirmed that the DVD is correct and all BDs are wrong by comparing them with the Tangerine Dream soundtrack CD. The soundtrack CD exactly matches the DVD but is roughly a semitone lower than all of the Blu-rays I've bought, none of which are German version(s). I've preordered this new one, but I might cancel if it's got the same dumb audio issue as every previous Blu-ray. |
