Default The Problems With Owning Huge Movie Collections

1st off before I started collecting BluRays a few years after they started I already had over 8 thousand DVD's ( that I am never going to sit down and add to the data base ).
This weekend I've been going through my BluRay / 4K collection and so far I have over 400 doubles sometimes triples .
The biggest problem is I just can't remember everything I've picked up plus buying other people's collections for the things I needed but was cheaper just to buy them all .
It's awesome having a lot of movies but it's not easy keeping up with them .
Think this summer I will take a week's vacation to inventory and cut loose a bunch of extras .
Interested in hearing other's opinion's who have huge collections .

I use the My Movies 3 app to catalog my blu-ray's as well as this site. My collection is a fraction of yours, but I still sometimes l forget what I've upgraded to 4K.

Jesus, I wouldn't even know where to store 5270 cases. I don't think I have the room.

It's way more than that I hate to say .
My old DVD collection is stored in the old type Budweiser beer bottle cases that are sturdy stacked on top of each other to the ceiling in a spare room (not to mention I've given thousands away as I upgraded to BD) .

That's what I use this site for otherwise I would be a little lost. I have a general idea what I've purchased before but this place definitely helps, Now finding shelf space for it all is a different matter

My collection is a fraction of your own but I'm still very reliant on the database/app provided by this site. When it comes to Horror I pretty much know everything I own typically, but for many of my other genres I can forget and that's where this site helps tremendously.

That said, I occassionally still mess up. Just 2-3 weeks ago I ordered a copy of Dr. Doolittle with my copy of Scarecrows from Hamilton Books because it was cheap and I didn't believe I owned it. Turns out I ended up buying a different, more recent re-release edition of a copy I already owned.

I can't imagine trying to keep track of everything with a collection your size without some sort of software. At worst I'd go back to my old system from the 2000's and have everything written down that I owned inside a notebook or perhaps would have a printed word document I'd carry with me.

I have a brain that's wired to remember stupid things, like the contents of my DVD/Blu or comic book collections, so I almost never wind up with duplicates unless it's on purpose.

However, I am thrilled with databases like the one at this site, just in case my brain ever decides to wander. A database, software, or even a word document is always a good thing for a collection.

I use this site to keep track of my collection. I pull it up on my phone in a store if I'm unsure if I own a movie or not. Or to check and see if a DVD I'm interested in has a Blu-ray counterpoint, prices, reviews, etc.

I accidentally bought the same movie twice a few times, but if I'm "upgrading" something I already own I try and get rid of the lesser copy for whatever I can get for it (if it's worth a few bucks: ebay,... if not: goodwill).

The tracker on this site is helpful, but I'm pretty good at remembering what I already have for the most part. The ones I bought twice I didn't remember because I hadn't watched them (LOL), so I had an unopened copy and then bought another extra one. But then I realized what I'd done when I tried to add them to the tracker.

I’ve immediately put everything I have into this website. It’s helped me. I have yet to forget I owned something and bought a duplicate.

I guess i'm still on the youngish side, so remembering what I own isn't that hard for me.

In fact, its sometimes easier for me to remember what I DON'T own.

The biggest problem by far is simply finding the time to watch them. Most of my 'movie time' is tied to the AMC A-list and the local indie theater. When I'm home it usually comes down to trying to find a compromise of what to watch with the spouse. The 'weird' stuff from Shout, Arrow, Vinegar, etc. is reserved for the odd days when I have the place to myself. And then there's all the content on streaming services. Other than that, storage is a pretty big issue and I've considered going digital for some of the non-essentials just to clear some space. As for duplicates, it does happen from time to time but not on the same level as with say comics.

I have as many as you, perhaps more. I generally have everything from up to late ‘15 on shelves. Everything after that is alphabetized in boxes. I keep everything on the collection feature on this site. My main issue is if I get one out and don’t put it back in the correct spot, I’ll have to look for 30 mins to find it. Plus the ridiculous amount of room it takes.

I seem to have no problem with what I own thanks to sights such as this where I can keep track of my database. It’s the storage and display I am having my strongest issues with.

I track all my blu-day discs here. It’s saved me from buying duplicates on more than one occasion.

I have only bought a movie I already owned a couple of times. Only because I was out and didn't have access to this site. My only issues are with the amount of space my collection takes up and being able to find the exact movie I'm looking for can sometimes be a pain.
