Default Night Of The Juggler (1980)

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0081230/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0

I've never seen Night Of The Juggler (1980) but I'm very intrigued by it. I love watching movies that were filmed in the NYC of the 60s, 70s, 80s and early 90s, where the city was crime-ridden and run-down. Such movies are like time-capsules/documentaries, and I am fascinated by NYC during that period.

All the stills I've seen of this film indicate that it fits the things I mentioned above. I'd love to have this movie on blu-ray but I can only find VHS copies online. Arrow Video or maybe even Powerhouse Films' Indicator label would be ideal candidates to release a restored version of this film.

What do you guys think??

I never heard of it. I look it up in IMDb website. So I'm interested to check it out.

Same here. I wonder why it's so hard to find.

I saw it when it was first released.

I vaguely recall something about 'rights issues' holding up a Blu Ray release. I don't think it was ever released on DVD either.

I know it was released on VHS though.

Exactly the same here! New York films - from the 70's and early 80s with the peak period being 77-83 - are amazing to watch. I am trying to watch as many films as I can on blu-ray from that period. And most of them are good. Saw a great one recently, John Cassavettes' Gloria.

Night of the Juggler I am waiting for. I believe this film was shot in 1978, but released in '80. Haven't seen it yet, actually.

I really hope that gets sorted out quickly.

I'm sorry for the late reply, friend.

I've been waiting to get my hands on a copy of Gloria for a long time but knowing that it is one of those gritty NYC films makes me want it even more! I recently picked up the BFI blu-ray of The Killing Of A Chinese Bookie- I look forward to that.

I also recently watched an uncut version of Fear City (1984)- it was the 1.33:1 Dutch DVD, though. Not the greatest film but worth watching it for the locations. Abel Ferrara films really capture gritty NYC very effectively.

I recently made a list, on IMDB, of films that I like that are set and filmed in NYC during the 60s, 70s, 80s and early 90s. If you have a couple of minutes, perhaps you can have a look:

https://www.imdb.com/list/ls575772365/

I'd also be grateful if you could recommend to me more movies that fit the criteria we both like, if you do not see them on my list.

Thanks!!

Great list!

Browsing through it I saw many first-rate New York films from that era. The first one that comes to mind that you haven't included - and that you must check out - is Defiance (1980) starring Jan-Michael Vincent. Except for it being a wonderful New York-film with nice-looking locations, it is also is a very entertaining movie. It's out on blu-ray.

Another one that is missing from your list are two New York movies by Paul Mazursky: Harry and Tonto (1973) and An Unmarried Woman (1978). I would particularly recommend that you watch An Unmarried Woman since it's not only a film of quality, but also a fine blu-ray release. New York looks very good in this!

I see that you included The Incident (1967). Saw this one recently and it was a masterpiece straight out of the box. Just a remarkable film.

A few comedies: The Out of Towners (1970) - not on blu, but avaliable in HD from Prime - and Prisoner of Second Avenue (1975). Both starring Jack Lemmon being very pissed off in The Big Apple. I return to these two films often.

Others New York films that come to mind (all avaliable on blu-ray):

The Seven-Ups (1973) starring Roy Scheider
The Goodbye Girl (1977) with Richard Dreyfuss
Nighthawks (1981) with Sylvester Stallone and Rutger Hauer
King of the Gypsies (1978) with Eric Roberts and Judd Hirsch
Without A Trace (1983) - another fabulous New York film starring Judd Hirsch. Very underrated. Not avaliable on blu, but avaliable on Amazon Prime.

A few that I haven't seen yet that are on my list: Claudine (1974), and
Fort Apache the Bronx (1981) starring Paul Newman, which I am hoping will hit blu-ray soon.

Here is also a list worth checking out: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o...ork_City#1970s

Thank you very, very much for the many recommendations you have made, as well as the information regarding blu-ray releases. I really appreciate the effort you put into this. I have already added most of these to my list, though I'll have to wait to buy some of them as some blu-rays are either really expensive or hard to find.

Defiance looks great- I love a good vigilante thriller, and this combines my love for NYC and vigilante films.
Fort Apache: The Bronx is one i've been waiting for for a very long time; I've never seen it.

If I discover more NYC films, I'll try to add them to my list and also let you know- just in case there are a few you have missed.

Sorry for the late reply and I hope you are having a great new year!

Night of the Juggler sounds great. I've never heard of the film before this thread, but I'm also a huge fan of NYC-based movies from this era.

I've found a couple of crummy pan & scan streams of this film online, but that's it. It doesn't look like it's been released to physical media since the VHS days. So, yes - it would be nice to see this on Blu-ray in the correct Anamorphic Widescreen format.

Good to meet another fan! Do have a look at the recommendations by Nicage22 above, as well as the list I made in IMDB, if you want to find more movies like this.
