Default Mafia 2! Who's joining the Mob?

I searched and didn't see a thread for this game, which seems strange. Is anyone interested?

Publisher: 2K Games
Developer: 2K Games
US Release Date: Aug 24, 2010
International Release Date: Aug 27, 2010
Platforms: PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360

PS3 Mafia II DLC free for first-time buyers

E3 2010 Made Man Trailer

Box Art:

Summary of the Game:
Born the son of a poor immigrant, Vito is a beaten down Italian American who is trying to secure his piece of the American Dream. Looking to escape the life of poverty that consumed his childhood, Vito is soon swayed by the lure of power and wealth that a life of Organized Crime can bring.

A petty criminal his whole life, Vito, along with his childhood friend, Joe, will descend into the world of Organized Crime. Together, they will work to prove themselves to the Mob as they try to make their names on the streets of a cold and unforgiving city.

Mafia 2 immerses players in the mob underworld of a fictitious late 1940's / early 1950's scenario. The game engages you in a cinematic Hollywood movie experience in a living, breathing city, fusing high octane gunplay with white knuckle driving and an engaging narrative.

I hope this game doesn't stink like the original. They've tried numerous times to come out with a mafia type video game and they've all gone to ***ts. Mafia one was slow as hell. Even the driving was slow. the original godfather was decent. (I played it on the original xbox), but i dont think it had that many fights or what not. I don't understand why Rockstar won't just make a damn 1940s Al Capone type game already instead of letting these other companies do it. We all know Rockstar would take it to the right level... NAH MEAN?!

Then you didn't really play it. You should've played it on PC, it was a completely different game.

Blew away GTA3 back in the day.

Sorry if there's a thread but I didn't see one!
Looks like I'll get the ps3 version instead of the 360 one for that reason alone. Just like what I did with Red Dead Redemption.

When it comes to multiplayer games, I get the version that's better (regardless what console it's on). I use game rankings for reference.

I'm extremely interested in this game, as I have a fascination with the mobster lifestyle. I sort of wish I was in the mob, actually. However, I don't know if I should rent it, or buy it. Has anybody heard how long the campaign will be? This will most likely be the deciding factor.

Mafia II: Three Things We Like, Three Things We Don't
When rising through the ranks of the mob, you have to take the good with the bad.

Quote:
We're a little more than a month away from the release of Mafia II, the crime drama that lets players rise through the ranks of the mob. In a nutshell, it can be described as Grand Theft Auto set in the '40s and '50s. We've played through several hours of the game now and are generally enjoying ourselves. Here are three things we're really digging about Mafia II – and three things we're not so crazy about:

Like: Stealth Missions
A mission called Balls and Beans in the second half of the game finds our hero Vito sneaking into a meat packing plant in order to rescue a couple pals that a rival family is holding hostage. If he is detected by the guards, the mission will be mission over, so Vito needs to find a way into the building that doesn't involve the front door. After investigating the area a bit, you'll find a sewer pipe that should provide you with underground access. Once you emerge inside, you'll need to make your way to the room where your pals are being held while remaining in shadows and avoiding detection.

This stealth mission is a fun way to break up the usual shooting and driving action of Mafia II. Hopefully, we'll have the opportunity to do more sneaking around in the game.

Like: Attention to Detail
Empire Bay is a fully realized metropolis with a variety of neighborhoods and citizens populating the streets. On macro and micro levels, the city looks great. You can drive out of the heart of downtown and watch the skyscrapers shrink into the horizon. Walk past a trash bin and you may spot a rat scurrying by.

Mafia II is split between the '40s and '50s, with appropriate licensed music plays in each decade. During the '40s you'll hear crooners like Perry Como and Bing Crosby. Cross over to the '50s and you'll hear the birth of rock and roll. The original score also carries dramatic weight.

And let's not forget those vintage Playboy magazines to be found lying around Empire Bay. We love looking for collectibles in games, and in Mafia II you will be rewarded with a centerfold for every magazine you find.

Like: Satisfying Gunplay
Like contemporary sandbox game Red Dead Redemption, Mafia II uses a cover system that allows players to duck behind obstacles and pop out to take shots at the enemy. Your targets will take cover, too, but you can chip away at concrete pillars and wooden crates in order to expose them. A subtle aim assist makes it easier to accurately spring from cover and take out an enemy with a headshot. Fun stuff.

Dislike: Unsympathetic Protagonist
Vito is a poor Italian immigrant just home from serving his country in World War II. He returns to find his elderly mother and young sister in trouble, as his recently deceased father moved on to the next life before settling his debts in this one. Vito needs to make some real money fast, so he turns to his friend Joe, a shady character who always seems to have money even though he doesn't have a job to speak of.

Sounds like a great setup, right? We agree; Vito has the makings of a great antihero who gets caught up with the wrong people for the right reasons. However, the mood is spoiled when, not 24 hours after returning home from the war, Vito goes on a killing spree and murders dozens of people. An early mission requires him to steal a car, and when the owners of said car try to prevent the theft Vito's unblinking response is to gun them all down. In fact, Vito never hesitates to do whatever despicable task Joe asks of him. He is all too eager to live a life of crime. Vito would seem more human, more sympathetic if he was morally conflicted about the dirty jobs he has to pull in order to help his family.

Dislike: Aggressive Cops
Cops are everywhere in Empire Bay. Everywhere. On foot or in patrol cars, you will rarely look at your mini map and not see a blue arrow representing a nearby cop. Stealing a car means smashing a window or playing a lock picking mini-game, and it can be difficult finding a spot free of the prying eyes of the police. Once you have a car, you have to watch your speed or else you'll be pulled over for a ticket. All of this law-dodging gets in the way of the action.

True, we were just complaining that Vito isn't realistic or human enough. But a sandbox game set in real life needs to strike a balance between a believable world and one that is fun to play around in. We could do with a little less law enforcement in Mafia II.

Dislike: Fistfights
Now and then you'll encounter a punk that needs to be taught a lesson but doesn't quite deserve a bullet in his gut. In these instances, the game switches to beat 'em up mode so you can settle your differences mano a mano. Unfortunately, these sections are pretty shallow. You have a light swing, a hard swing, and an impenetrable block. Your opponent has the same moves, so all you do is wait for them to let their guard down and then punch them a few times. Repeat until they're knocked out. We almost fell asleep during a few of these sequences.

Even though we've included equal amounts of likes and dislikes here, overall we've been having fun with Mafia II. You can check it out for yourself on August 24 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.
