Retail sources also tell us that Disney is planning on releasing The Little Mermaid as a 2D and 3D Diamond Edition on Blu-ray sometime late this summer, following a planned theatrical re-issue in 3D.

I think The Digital Bits and Blu-ray.com are mistaken. The theatrical re-release is scheduled for September 13th, not the Blu-ray. So I believe the BD is still coming the first Tuesday of October (the 1st in this case) just like all the other fall Diamonds.

And I'm really glad they used the 1997 teaser poster as the cover. Very classy.

You know, I think the cover art's fanmade, which (if it is) shocks me since The Digital Bits is more reliable than that. The reason I think so is because someone on DVDizzy made a fanart for the standard BD, and that image so happens to be on our site, and the art we have for the 3D one (which is the same as the Digital Bits one) has varying degrees of sharpness. The Disney logo is sharp, the film title is slightly less so, and the rest of the art is soft. Plus, the "3D" is doesn't have the shadow backing that the film title does. So with a fanart cover and inaccurate timeframe, it looks like this bit of news is non-news, but then I could be wrong.

To me, it's just Disney's temp art. Until a better version comes along.

The same cover art is in the database, and it was added 12/21 so it's probably legit. It could be an official placeholder image if anything. I actually thought the same thing when I first saw the official Peter Pan cover art, which this one kind of reminds me of.

This will be out on October 1, just like all of the other big Disney Platinum/Diamond releases.

The 3D theatrical releases is out on September 13.

Probably, I could imagine it coming in a seashell (no laughing Montery Jack!) with some whoozits with whatzits. I know that part seems far-fetched but I can see it happening as that is a big part of the story

According to disneyvault.com the blu release will be the same day as the re-release in theaters.

News has been circling around the web about The Little Mermaid being scheduled to be re-released in theatres on September 13th 2013 in 3D. The interesting part of this article is that Disney is planning to release the 3D Blu-ray and Blu-ray on the exact same day.

Not really. Compared to the Walt films and the films after Mermaid, the film is actually a bit primitive. I'm in no hurry to see it in 3D. YMMV.
