Default Boxing Day Sales

I don't get any flyers. Any decent Boxing Day sales advertised? Gonna be in Kelowna for the next week so not sure what's in the flyers.

Wouldn't mind seeing this summer's two crappiest movies going for cheap:
Terminator: Genysis
Fantastic Four

I'm still looking to pick up Edge of Tomorrow, but I see it went up in price again in WM.

You cannot read the flyers online? As for those three titles you will not find them cheap until several months from now.

😆😆

Use to love waiting for the flyers and going on hunts through Walmart Boxing Day displays. HMV, Best Buy, etc…those were the days.

Remember the Cineplex store? They had wicked deals on Boxing week including a time they had a price error on Shout titles. $1.99 for the Bruce Lee set!

Or that famous Amazon glitch a few years ago that overly discounted the BOGO movies to the point of some getting their movies at next to no charge.

Always on the lookout every year but I usually end up saving my money on Boxing Day now.

I think of the amazon glitch fondly and often, especially after the whole Columbo deal from a few weeks back. Also, the Dick Van Dyke complete series pricing error that I happened to come across at the right time and didn't discover it was an error til months afterwards. Praying to Santa that theres something similar day after tomorrow.

Boxing Day is lame now. Post pandemic the entertainment industry got ****ed up. From watered-down physical media releases (no more future proofing), to shitty, lazy writing in the movie storylines themselves, to lack of sales on Black Friday and Boxing Day. Hollywood sucks right now. Disney is a prime example that they have no faith in their own brand and have to rely on Star Wars and Marvel to carry them (how many movies did they release under their own label recently? Not much, not like back in the 90s when their brand was strong). I've hardly gone to the theater over the last couple years because the writing is so bad. Hardly bought any physical releases too. I think this year I bought a total of less than 10 blu-rays. And it's clear, the big push on the streaming. I guess they realized people can't afford big homes and big collections anymore, and younger people getting pushed into tiny condos so... streaming.

I've actually switched my entertainment to retro-gaming, watching sports, and reading books. Noticed the second year of the pandemic, people were cleaning their houses and dumping off a lot of great gaming gear and games in thrift stores. Found a ton for cheap and was able to build up my game library for the consoles I got (NES, SNES, N64, GameCube, Wii, WiiU and Xbox360). However, 2024 was noticeable that the selections in thrift stores were no longer great because resellers jumped on the bandwagon.

I mean, boxing day does suck I agree. But as a movie fan, the last few years have been pretty damn incredible, there are so many great releases from boutique labels. Anybody that love movies should be overwhelmed by how many releases there are. I mean my God, just in the last two years or so we've gotten more than a hundred shaw brothers movies on blu ray, something we've never seen on physical media. I can't even keep up!

Things have been better than ever for physical releases, so I have no idea what you mean. :/

And the key words here are "boutique labels". Sure, those were good. But the mainstream stuff sucked. In quantity and quality.

Sure but the boutique labels release hundreds and hundreds of stuff every year. Who cares the mainstream stuff sucks? Heck, pretty much everybody prefer when the big studios let boutiques release their stuff, so what's the problem here? I don't see anyone complaining that the Conan movies were released by Arrow instead of the majors? Or that Warner archives released the Searchers instead of the main Warner studios. So why complain?

Things are better than ever, boutiques have been killing it. What would you prefer, for the main studios to release more of their own stuff in lesser quality? I just don't get the complain here, especially on a blu ray and 4k forums. Who cares if the big studios barely release anything anymore, let the boutiques thrive. With so many great releases this year, how do you end up only buying 9 blu ray anyway? I can assure you that you probably missed out on a lot of awesome releases this year.

Heck, just in the last few weeks I received the BFI 4k of Seven samurai and the Arrow 4k of The great escape. Two of my favorite movies of all time getting the deluxe treatment. Even Sony is killing it. They just released a 20 Frank Capra movies box set, with all the major movies in both 4k and blu ray. Mr. Deeds goes to town in 4k??? How frigging awesome is that for movie fans?

Arrow released their Shawscope vol. 3 (the legendary One-armed swordsman trilogy finally on blu ray??). We have The Searchers that just came out in a fantastic new 4k. Criterion is releasing so many damn great movies in 4k (Kurosawa in 4k? The original Gojira?? Even Godzilla vs Biollante??). The list just goes on and on. There's something for everyone out there. It is so great to be a movie fan that it's overwhelming at this point.

Like you, I don't really care about the newest movies coming out in theaters or on streaming, most of them disappoint me. But I could care less. I watch hundreds of movies every year that i've never even seen and they were all released between 1920 and 2000. And with Boutique labels doing the good work, we get to discover (or rediscover) them. I can't even find the time to watch them all, let alone buy them all. And yet, here you are telling us there's nothing out there.

You don't care about the newest Marvel or Fast and Furious movies? Good, that gives you more time to discover actual classics instead. I watched a 150 classic westerns in the last two years, probably at least 60 Shaw brother movies, hundreds of Hollywood movies from the golden age, a bunch of silent movies, etc. Just now, i'm in the middle of watching another 50 shaw brothers movie marathon and my wife just gave me that awesome Frank Capra set. There's so much to watch that i'm in movie Heaven, how anyone could complain we are in a movie drought is beyond me. :P

Edit: sorry about the rant lol. It's just been such a fantastic year for movie collectors, I couldn't stop myself.

The price tag on many of those boutique releases are a bit of a turn off for me. If they were priced closer in line with the major studios, it’d be a lot easier for me to be excited.

Well unfortunately they won’t be, as that’s not where the physical media market is anymore.
