@kpkelley: That's not one of his choices. I think he wants to know how these 2 compare.
I've owned a Sony S1, and I've read that the S300 has equivalent PQ to the S1. Sony has frequent firmware updates and is much better at support than Samsung. All of the standalones are slow compared to the PS3. The Panny BD30 is the fastest of that bunch. |

Between those two, the S300 appears to be much more reliable, but it does not decode/bitstream TrueHD or DTS-HD MA. The P1400 will decode & bitstream TrueHD and bitstream DTS-HD MA, but it seems to have had all sorts of problems playing particular BD's (Fox releases, in particular).
So it depends on what your needs are. Personally, the Samsungs have all seemed kinda dodgy to me-- I would go for the Sony, or a Panasonic, if you are considering a standalone player. |

If you are willing to entertain the idea, the PS3 is an even safer way to go. With the ability to update through a wireless connection, the fact that it TELLS YOU that there's an update available instead of constantly having to look for an update, the fact that it is almost 3 minutes quicker on loading Blu-ray content, and that it's already practically guaranteed to meet all future profile standards... it can't be beat. And all of that is just the facts about Blu-ray playback. The PS3 offers about 30 other features that just make it that much more useful in a home entertainment centre. |

Nope, not the same. The S300 (and pretty much any BD player, and DVD players for that matter) decode the lossy Dolby Digital and Legacy DTS codecs. True HD and DTS-HD MA are the new lossless codecs present on various BD releases, and the S300 cannot decode these at this time. The S300 can play back lossless multichannel LPCM on the various Sony/Disney/WB BD releases.

Amen. In my opinion the 40gb is the best player for the price and is also the best gaming console, a web browser, and a media hub. Also it supports or will support profile 2.0 or whatever it is called.
