Looks like a very nice release. It has 2 new commentary tracks, both with Park Chan-wook, which is great. Wouldn't be surprised if Arrow releases this on 4K too.

Quote:
Extras:
  • NEW! Audio Commentary with director Park Chan-wook with English subtitles
  • NEW! Audio commentary with director Park Chan-wook, actors Song Kang-ho, Lee Byeong-hun, Lee Yeong-ae, Kim Tae-woo, Shin Ha-gyoon with English subtitles
  • The JSA Story archival featurette(36:47)
  • Making the Film archival featurette (14:01)
  • About JSA, a series of archival introductions to the film by members of the cast (2:19)
  • Behind the scenes montage (14:35)
  • Opening ceremony footage (3:04)
  • Letter from a Private music video (4:50)
  • Take the Power Back music video (4:01)

It was released on UHD in France in 2022, but this is the first English-friendly UHD release of the film.

Would be really nice if this has a subtitle track that covers the entire movie and not just the Korean parts.

I don't know that those commentaries are actually new, but I think these are "new" in the sense that they've never been released with English subtitles before.

This could be true re. the commentaries. I took a look at the back cover of the French Jokers UHD and saw the following:

- JSA: Par-delà la frontière, un entretien avec Park Chan-Wook (52 min)
- Commentaire audio du réalisateur
- Commentaire audio de l'équipe du film

The PCW interview on the Umbrella could also be the one that's on the Jokers disc.

BTW, the Umbrella 4K also has Dolby Atmos!

Straight from BDinfo. They probably just accidentally encoded it with the English tag

Accidental labeling happens quite often.

has anyone taken a look at this transfer and reviewed it? is it worth getting it or wait for an Arrow release with potentially better encoding?

Wondering the same. After quite awhile on my blind buy shelf, I Finally got around to Arrow's BD earlier in the year and fell in love with it. Now I'm looking to get a definitive edition for the collection.

So I'd say its definitely a big upgrade from the Arrow Blu-ray. Massively improved contrast and color, makes the Arrow look dated.

However, compression is iffy/bad. Often in the high 20s and low 30s, resulting in mushy and artifacty grain at times. Also found a scene 28:55 - 29:15 where there is literally zero grain on the 4K and bitrate down to 18mbps; hard to say given its a new master if there was DNR applied in the master for a scene like this or if its all compressions fault. Note: that scene is shown in the above caps, the one named "Untitled_1.7.1". Also at times it seems like black level is higher than ideal but not knowing this movie well I can't say if this is an issue or not

So definitely an upgrade from the 1080p blu-ray overall picture-wise, but there is definite big room for improvement on the encoding end. I think it took a long time for the first pressing of the old Blu-ray to sell out though, so it may be a while before another label makes a go at a 4K UHD. Even with the iffy encoding though its still worth the money to upgrade, because the color/contrast is so much better.

Thanks, that sounds unfortunate on the encoding side. I might just wait for Arrow to do their own 4k at some point. I've heard Umbrella is weak with encoding, heard some complaints about the compression on their Possession 4k release.

Possession's 4K UHD encoding is fine, its on a BD100. You can read the review here, which specifically applauds its encode:

I'm waiting for the Second Sight announcement on that one since they said they are working on it and Second Sight's encoding have been overall great.

That's true but they are two different things. The Le Chat Qui Fume/Umbrella is the official 4K restoration that was theatrically exhibited by Metrograph Pictures in 2021, approved by the living rightsholders, etc. Second Sight on the other hand will is doing their own thing based on their previous Blu-ray and the input of the cameraman. So likely they will be quite different, not just encoding difference. If you are a fan it might be worth owning both.
