Default Please message Sony to stop with BD-Rs

consumer@SPHECustomerSupport.sony.com

This is beyond ridiculous to charge a premium price for a movie burnt onto a disc. Want to get out of the blu-ray game altogether? Well, license those movies to Kino, Criterion, Arrow, Shout, etc. if anything, this is just going to increase piracy of their movies and/or increase imports from other companies.

We can still use our voice before their whole back catalog is getting pressed onto blank discs and sent out in substandard editions.

It won't change anything. They don't see enough of a market to invest in pressing thousands of discs, and they probably are right.

If WB can find profit in pressing their MOD discs, why can't Sony? Burning them is just ridiculous.

It does feel weird that Sony couldn't follow the exact same model as WAC.

That said, I doubt an email campaign will change their mind.

Ideally that's what we all hope for with any MOD program. I don't know why Sony didn't think it would work for them.

As if there needs to be any further examples that Sony is a complete hot mess from the top down these days.

Umm, what does it matter whether it's burned or pressed?

Burned discs are more prone to read errors and don't last nearly as long as a "pressed" disc.

Durability of the disc seems to be the biggest issue. BD-R shelf life is significantly shorter.

Yeah, I kinda feel the same It's not like it's a bootleg, it's being officially released from THE STUDIO If I hadn't already bought the French release of the 4K remaster, I would splurge for this one instead. If it works and functions like a real factory pressed blu-ray disc, I could care less.

Supposedly, there are/were many more compatibility issues which is why Warner Archive went with the "real thing" for blu-ray - when they were already willing to do burned discs with DVD. There could also be durability issues (BD-R lacks the protective layer of a normal blu-ray, so it can scratch more easily like a DVD).

Presumably they still have artwork like a normal disc.

I don't get why they cant at least do small pressings of normal discs. Like the 1st 1000 or 3000 units. Then after those sell out, burned discs for anyone that wants the film in the future. I'm not totally against burned discs once we get to extreme niche items, but certainly I would prefer they not go that route.

I expect pressed discs to last many decades but burned discs certainly won't. The reason I support physical media is that titles continue to be available long after the studios drop support... if the discs don't have longevity then they are no better than downloads.

Don't BD-Rs last forever? I know (unfortunately) DVD-Rs last up to 30 years if stored properly.

BD-R's can theoretically last over 100 years.

Theoretically... but they won't. No matter what anyone says otherwise pressed discs will always be more reliable than burned.

No offense here but Sony licenses to:

Twilight Time - nearly everyone pitches a fit because it is 3000 copies only, $30 plus shipping, or some other complaint.

Criterion - oddly few complaints and everyone seems happy paying $20 to $30 (sometimes less because Barnes & Noble).

Image - nearly everyone pitches a fit because what happened to the extras?

Mill Creek - nearly everyone pitches a fit because Mill Creek's consistency is the based on a darts and chimpanzees. So the assumption is DD 2.0 audio only and no extras. Sometimes they surprise us though with DTS-HD MA 5.1 audio and an extra. But then there is the subtitle issue.

Kino? You okay with paying at least $18 a release and maybe having the extras if Sony is being generous?

Arrow? You with paying at least $20 a release?

Licensing does not mean a title is going to be cheaper, have extras, or even subtitles. It just means the studio needs to offset costs and sometimes a title gets passed on by everyone. So what then?

I doubt Arrow wants The Karate Kid Part III & The Next Karate Kid without the first two and Sony won't let those go. And Twilight Time already had Body Double and TT has stopped reissues due to consumer complaints.

So Mill Creek? I'd love Mill Creek to get these but then you might end up with DD 2.0 audio and any fantastic extras are pretty much excluded.

HAH!!!! that's theoretical. Real life DVD-R's really only last a few years most of the time. there are exceptions but most have a shelf life of 5-9 years

You know for a fact that not a single BD-R in existence will last 100 years or more?

I'm not willing to take the chance. If it's not on pressed physical media, I'm not buying it.

I have had a few go bad on me, but I can say that I have dozens of DVD-R's that were recorded between 2001 and 2005 that are still going strong. And they're recorded on different media too, not all on the same brand (TDK, Maxell, Memorex, Sony, Apple, etc).
