![]() It shouldn’t come as much of a shock, but German developer Daedalic Entertainment’s upcoming The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is a PlayStation 5 game. The title was quietly announced last year, with a 2021 release date attached. At the time, the organisation said that it would deploy on “all relevant console platforms”. Now, a new EDGE feature confirms that it’s a “stunning next-gen adventure”. The ambitious effort is being created in collaboration with Middle-earth Enterprises, and promises a “narrative-driven experience”. “We tell Gollum's story from a perspective never seen before, in any storytelling medium, all the while staying true to the legendary books of J.R.R. Tolkien,” Daedalic CEO Carsten Fichtelmann explained last year. Hopefully more details are forthcoming. https://www.pushsquare.com/news/2020...gJL-028Yy1b64s |

Okay, i really loved the latest Shadow of Mordor games and whilst i'd love to play them both back to back soon and definitely wanted a next gen game exploring all the lands of Middle Earth but as Gollum? Hmm. Well, let's see when a trailer lands too. Hopefully it'll be better than my lowered expectations.
So is this PS5 exclusive? As it seems just one console mentioned. |

Can't wait to spend 70 hours crawling on walls, hiding from orcs, stalking hobbits, and looking for raw fish.

Personally i don't see this particular entry doing that but allegedly they have 3 titles in total planned including this. So i'm hopeful another entry might be better served for that. I actually quite like Skyrim though and they're hard at work on Elder Scrolls 6 for next gen i believe.

I think that wouldn't be too bad depending on how much leeway they actually get to craft his story their own way. Showing him off as a noble warrior and doing everything right up until that final battle and then show a cutscene of how powerful the ring was at corrupting him and by then you basically have the original LOTR movies.

I just can't envision a character like Gollum engaging in combat the same way Talion does in Shadow of Mordor. If they want to make the game epic and have some form of combat with the Gollum character, I suspect they'll either:

I still think the ultimate open world game would be The Lord of the Rings: The One Ring. Have it be about you, as Frodo, trying to bring the ring to Mordor. But here's the catch. With a vast open world, you literally gotta choose how to get it there, by any means necessary. From the foothills of the Shire to the flames of the Mount of Fire.

This PS5 game being a Narrative driven story game, I imagine there won't be much freedom to explore, but be led on a linear path in levels. I hope I'm surprised and it's more open world.

With the Shadow of Mordor games, that was a nice hint of an open map game connected by narrow paths, but a bit linear in the fact that each map leads to a different map, rather than being one giant open landscape. |

Any reason why it couldn't have multiple campaigns based on the other main characters? I could see it working out either by switching the POV at certain checkpoints, or (what I think would be more interesting), have other campaigns unlocked after beating it with Frodo, then you can experience the same events from a different perspective (similar to what other games do, like Fist of the North Star: Ken's Rage or something--however, I don't think this has been done with an open-world game yet).

That would be cool if you could finish the game as any character you wanted. Would the Fellowship characters be playable as a team, or single, lone characters instead?
I'd like a game where you could just venture out on your own. Offline. Shadow of Mordor 2 is very much like that, but the levels are all about fighting mostly. |
