Fantastic! Love these films.
I keep meaning to revisit POLA X, largely because it has such a different energy from all his other work. Maybe we'll have a bd of it before too long. I know better than to dare hope for LOVERS ON THE BRIDE. ![]() |

I was on a search for the UK edition of Mauvais Sang and saw this. Where the heck have I been? This is a top ten film for me. I am glad I had the chance to see the restoration on the big screen - simply amazing. Can't wait to own this - but that price is not very enticing to say the least.
And I am glad this release has the title as Mauvais Sang. I never really dug the alternate title The Night is Young. |

great review ! (as always...)
do you think that Carlotta US also will plan to release it in France too ? well... since you notice that the Blu-Ray US was region free, I probably don't have to wait... just to be sure that I've correctly understood (I'm French, I know this is not an excuse...) : "The release uses as foundation the same recent 2K restoration which British distributors Artificial Eye accessed when they prepared their Blu-ray release for the UK market -- and this is certainly very good news. The improvements in quality are dramatic " you mean that improvements in quality are dramatic when you compare the US Blu-Ray Carlotta release with the DVD Artificial Eye not the blu-ray ? if yes I totally agree. But I already bought the Artificial Eye on blu-ray and was very pleased with the picture quality (but it seems that the VIDEO note for the US Carlotta Blu-Ray is a bit higher than the UK Artificial Eye Blu-Ray).... Why ? would you recommend the Carlotta release for those who already own the Artificiae Eye Blu-Ray ? Despite the fact that there is an extra movie on this Carlotta movie. Is the transfer of the Carlotta even better (bitrate, grain, HD details) than the Artificial Eye blu-ray ? |

![]() 1. The comparison is with the old R2 DVD release. I have the old Carax DVD box set which Artificial Eye released (I left a photo in the review for the UK release). The difference in quality is literally like night and day. Wonderful new 2K restorations (for Mauvais Sang and Boy Meets Girl). So, yes, Artificial Eye and Carlotta are both using the 2K restorations. 2. Second question: I don't know at the moment. But I can ask next week. 3. The encoding is actually slightly better on the two Carlotta releases. Mauvais Sang, in particular, looks fantastic. 4. A quick note: If you are planning to get the Mauvais Sang disc, keep in mind that Mister X has a little bit of dialog in Japanese. It is subtitled in English, but not in French. Lovely documentary with some very good observations about Carax's career and his 'exile'. (Very similar to Michael Cimino's after Heaven's Gate). ![]() (From the AE review). ![]() Pro-B |

about Carax on French Blu-Ray via Carlotta I think that I've read something about this on dvdclassik... "in a next so distant future..." (perhaps, if I remember the post via a Carax box set)
but since the Blu-Ray US Carlotta release is great (original title "Mauvais Sang"-good point; great artwork), why waiting for an "hypothetic" French release? Mind you, there still some bad suprises (for instance "filtered grain" on "les Dimanches de Ville d'Avray" (aka Sundays and Cybele) on Wide Side BR vs Criterion (which fortunately used the same transfer but untempered) Fortunately I bought the browning Criterion Sundays and Cybelle... so the picture quality is even better than on the Blu-Ray UK Artificial Eye. I love so much this movie that I could consider a "double-dip"... well, regarding Japanese and subtitles for "Mr. X".... it's not a problem for me; I can read English (even if my messages doesn't totally imply that - I know I know ![]() if the subtitles are removable like they are (optional) on the Artificial Eye release that's fine for me... (apparently you wrote that subtitles are optional/removable and available for main feature, "Mr. X" and even the deleted scenes) Last edited by RupertPupkin; 10-26-2014 at 10:05 AM. |

2. If you already have the AE release, you are fine. As I said, the encoding is slightly better on the Carlotta release, but both releases are very good. The English subtitles are optional on Mauvais Sang and Boy Meets Girl. They are also optional on Mister X. I have to go now. Have a great Sunday, Mr. Pupkin ![]() Pro-B |

Maybe the screencaps between the 2 releases aren't perfect matches, but it seems brightness levels are a bit different between the two MS as well. Particularly the shot of the old lady looking out the car window, the Artificial Eye looks quite bright in comparison. Artificial Eye has been my favorite UK label for visual presentation, but since I had Holy Motors I kept holding off on the box set. I just hope we can get a good sale price on the Carlota at some point. I'm glad to see the excellent video "house look" of the label doesn't seem to have been altered on the US versions. The French boutique labels are usually the most natural looking to me on my set.
I would've liked to save money with the UK set on sale, but Pro-B's comment about slightly better encoding is the final nail in the coffin of my trying to save $. |

His first 3 films all got 4K restorations. I truly hope the TV cut of POLA X finally gets a commercial release, too. |

Boy Meets Girl and The Night is Young (Mauvais Sang) are on the UK collection:
![]() Dr. Svet's review https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/The-L...112912/#Review I see Kino's The Lovers on the Bridge (Les amants du Pont-Neuf) has all but disappeared and now fetching silly money. I paid $10.00 in July 2019. |
