Default So many questions…

Been “out of the game” for a long time. I passively had my speakers set up, and then put them in storage almost 2 years ago, so I could move, but house I really wanted fell through, and in storage they sat until now.

2 weeks ago I started moving into my new house. Had a problem with one of my speakers so bought 2 more (right?!?) and then found it was a very fixable problem. Speaker had a bad crossover from BEFORE it went into storage, and I had bought a new crossover I had forgotten all about!!!

My Emotiva XPA 3 went to a coworker’s son to repair and never came back….. that was about 3 years ago. I guess I should have paid to send it back.

Anyways, with the speaker now fixed, and “new extra” speakers, here is what I am working with, not knowing how to best optimize my audio.

I got a new TV for the new house (every-day space so no projector)

So current equipment list, and how I have it connected (and not connected)

86” 4K tv, no idea the model, got it last week
Marantz Sr7002
Panasonic 420 4K BD player
B&K 200.5 Amp

I currently run HDMI (2.0 I think?) from TV to BD, and another from BD to Marantz

Will I get best possible audio codecs still, or do I need a new processor?

I am currently using the AMP ( 200w x5) only to power the L/R/C. I watch movies (testing purposes only at this point) on “Pure direct” mode.

I also run a y-splitter off the Sub-out on the Marantz to 2 Subs.

My current speaker list (willing to upgrade front stage)

B&W 705’s (4 of these)
HTM7
B&W 685’s. (3 of these)
Walsh Ohm 2.0 (pair)

Subwoofers:

Cerwin Vega Sub-150 (15” downward firing 150W sub that is older than most on this forum but still going strong)
SVS PB-16 Ultra (another housewarming gift to myself)

Currently running pair of subs, and B&W 705’s and an HTM7 as L/R/C

I currently have no surround’s running.

Craziest construction I have ever seen. I can’t run wire in wall, in crawl (it’s an addition on a crawl) or in ceiling. Room is good sized, 25’ x 35’ with 16’ vaulted ceiling’s (so plan is to add 3 more PB-16’s when I can sneak them in)

I have an electrician who claims he can run my wires for my surrounds, so that will hopefully be happening soon (in addition to a whole house generator and surge protection)

I am guessing my wiring issues are a fixable issue, but how much am I limited by my Marantz Sr7002, and are there work-arounds for the audio, or do I need to upgrade? I have no problem streaming directly through TV with TV audio only, just trying to get the best out of my physical library through the player

Sorry this was so long! A lot has been going on!

Pictures when I can remember how to do that

The SR7002 can handle Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio (so 7.1), but I don't think it does ATMOS if that's of interest. You'll have to run the audio from the player to the AVR and run video to the TV. As the AVR is limited to HDMI 1.3 from what I can gather with a quick glance on-line.

Using an HDMI 2.0 or 2.1 cable from player to AVR won’t cause issues though right? Just for my audio?

I am not interested in Atmos, and 6.1 or 7.1 is all I was planning

No, they're backwards compatible.

The Marantz will work fine. It has a decent amplifier section since they made receivers a bit better back then it seems. Your two subs are very different, so I would be careful with placement and make sure they are dialed in correctly. Don’t have both of them up front for example. Running them off a splitter will not be a problem.

I know you mention that you don’t have a problem using tv speakers for streaming, but several folks on this forum say positive things about the audio being decent through a streaming device like an Apple TV.

Good luck with the room!

What's up Beta Man?!!! We're both still alive!!!! First...Your receiver is long in the tooth...time to upgrade. Everything else is pretty much good to go unless you have that upgrade bug.

I'd upgrade just for the improvements in room correction. Since he's not worried about Atmos, he can opt for an older receiver from Accessories4Less. If he wants to go the used route there's always USAudioMart.com - his power amp is a beast....worth holding on to. I think that's the only thing I'd do is get a new receiver (as newer receivers can measure dual subs properly....or he can go the miniDSP route as well).

MiniDSP is a good idea with the mismatched subs. Placement will still be the key there. I personally am not a fan of room correction since I trust my ears more than a cheap mic that comes with a receiver, but I know they do have their place. I am still messing around with Dirac live, but keep going back to the profiles I dialed in myself. Previously, Room Perfect neutered my room, so the Lyngdorf went back.

Future plan is 3 more PB-16’s, so not sure I can justify an AVR upgrade just for room correction purposes.

Still waiting for electrician to pull wiring for my surrounds, and run 2 new dedicated lines for the gear (again, probably overkill, but he’s doing other stuff already)
