Default Blu-ray Apple TV (Apple TV Take 3)

Does anyone think that Apple is going to release a Blu-ray Apple TV (Apple TV Take 3) by next year?

I'm starting to save my money and hope by MacWorld 2009 a Blu-ray Apple TV will be released.

Short answer: No.

Your best bet for a Blu-Ray AppleTV-like experience is to buy a PS3 and hope that Sony launches the rumored PS3 download service. And since there's still no way to play a Blu-Ray movie on a Mac, you can't even hope for an AppleTV hack to enable an external Blu-Ray drive to be used.

That's dorky even on the Steve Jobs scale.

This is BS. Mac users can purchase a Blu-ray drive to attach or install in their Macs...

The DVD Player software in OS X supports HD and Toast already allows for the burning & creation of Blu-ray discs.

Yes, you can attach a drive and read and burn data Blu-Ray discs, but that's the extent of Blu-Ray support from OS X. The drive CANNOT decode and play Blu-Ray movie discs. Or at least copyrighted movies like any commercial media would be. There is no Mac equivalent of something like PowerDVD for OS X and Apple hasn't added the necessary support for Blu-Ray DRM to the operating system.

2009 is a long wait for something that is not yet confirmed.

A 25-year devoted MacHead here....

I would not wait. Get a BD player with the price and features that you want.

But for iTMS, Apple would have been the first pc maker to offer a pc with a BD drive.

Since we're dreaming up fictitious devices here, how about an AppleTV with a built-in Blu-ray player? I can watch my favorite Blu-ray movies with true HD PQ and AQ, or I can download imitation HD movies with imitation HD PQ and AQ, plus stream my iTunes library and podcasts. It's the best of both worlds!

I personally think AppleTV will be added to the list of big Apple blunders by the end of the year. I am a lifelong Apple user, but I just don't see it taking off. The whole concept of AppleTV is to inherently bypass the need of any physical media, and with Steve Jobs being the hardcore minimalist that he is -- I think it's probably a 1:1000000 chance there'll be an AppleTV with integrated Blu-Ray player. That's just not their business.

I, however, am waiting for a round of upgraded MacBook Pros that have integrated BDRW drives. That definitely is a possibility. Perhaps not in this upcoming round of MacBook upgrades, but it's a very realistic possibility.

The AppleTV is not meant to be a replacement for Blu-Ray or DVD. People will always want to own a movie on physical media.

Blu-ray players are not going to be overthrown by AppleTV. Blockbuster might, Netflix might but there will always be a market for purchased media on a physical form.

AppleTV is designed to:

1) bring your media on itunes to the TV and audio setup.
2) rent movies without having to leave the house only to get there and find that they don't have what you want.

its not a replacement for Blu-ray players, game systems or Tivo.
