It is cool that REDBOX rents 4K Blu-ray discs for $2.50 a night at select locations and $2.00 for standard Blu-ray discs. Regular Blu-ray rentals are offered at all locations. REDBOX has over 42,000 automated machines with Blu-ray discs.
https://www.redbox.com/4K I wish Netflix Unlimited Blu-ray rental program by mail included 4K Blu-ray disc, but they do not rent those discs, at least not yet. But for $14.99 a month one can have all the Blu-ray’s that they want (limit of 2 Blu-ray discs out at a time). Or $9.99 a month for a limit of 1 Blu-ray disc out at a time. |

Netflix used physical media to get a subscriber base, with streaming always being their ultimate goal. I think they've been chomping at the bit to shut down their mail service ever since they went streaming. I wouldn't expect them to ever add UHDs. I have used Redbox a few times for UHDs and I've had no bad experiences so far.

Many people are within 5 to 10 minute drive to their closes REDBOX machine. However some people that live in extreme rural areas of America need to drive around 40 minutes one direction to get to the closes REDBOX machine. Therefore NETFLIX Blu-ray by mail is a nice alternative.
I believe awhile ago I got a email from REDBOX mentioning a unlimited monthly Blu-ray rental program similar to NETFLIX, but I do not have the pricing on my screen currently. |

I had Netflix from 2008 to 2014. For the first few years it was great. I'd mail in a BD on Saturday and I'd get a new one on Tuesday. For most of those years I'd get the top title in my queue if it said available. Then beginning in 2013 that started to change. They began randomly skipping several titles down my list when it showed the ones above to be available. I complained to Netflix and they said that they had no control over it. Then in 2014 my local distribution center closed so that the 1 day turnaround time went out the window. So, if I wanted a Tuesday release I had to mail back the previous disc on Friday. I did this for a few months and then finally said the hell with it when they raised prices again for about the fifth time in a 6 year period. I'll probably never have Netflix again. As far as Redbox goes UHDs are a horrible idea because all it takes is the slightest imperfection to make the discs unreadable. I worked at Blockbuster from 2001 to 2004 and people treat their discs like shit.

Atlanta (still) isn't a test market for Redbox UHD, but a little while ago a single copy of A Quiet Place II 4K showed up at my local kiosk. Someone must have rented it while traveling and returned it locally. Even though I already own the movie, I used a free rental code to get it and then returned it the next day. Just wanted to send a small message to the highers-up that there's demand for UHD in my area.
As for the disc itself, it was clean like most of the Blu-rays I've rented from my usual kiosk. I think that so long as 4K UHD adoption remains a fraction of that of Blu-ray, the less those discs will be handled and the less damage they'll sustain from frisbee- and hockey-playing consumers. Unless they were Day 1 rentals, my Blockbuster Blu-ray discs were usually pretty badly beaten up. |

Was looking to spin the Fallen Kingdom UHD BD as a refresher before Dominion next month.
redbox appears to have abandoned their (largely nominal) UHD BD support. That splash page is still up but even clicking a movie shown on that page and selecting the UHD BD version to "Rent at the kiosk" goes nowhere. But of course the "Buy on demand" option clicks through for a purchase . . . in HD. Sad state of affairs: Can't flip a copy through my Amazon store since, like many new releases, the disc is a restricted listing; Netflix of course is not renting UHD BDs; and frankly the supplements that would traditionally push me towards disc (versus just streaming it--it is on Prime) don't sound that impressive on this release. And I already have a ridiculous Watch List on 3D Blu-ray Rental. Last edited by Paul.R.S; 05-04-2022 at 02:47 AM. |
