Default When the soundtrack is better than the film

Was just listening to the Top Gun OST and have to concede that it's far better than the actual film it's attached to (perfectly fitting for it, but more enjoyable than sitting through the film).

Another that comes to mind is Blues Brothers 2000. Terrible movie but the soundtrack has been in my regular rotation for years.

You?

Superman IV: The Quest for Peace - the full Alexander Courage soundtrack (chopped up and edited in the film and losing much of the music) is really good. Probably the best soundtrack for Superman after the original.

Disagree with the OP about Top Gun. The songs & the film are intrinsically connected for me. Hard to imagine one without the other.

Fully agree about Blues Brothers 2000 though. Bad film, great soundtrack.

There's so many to choose from, but the first two that sprung to mind were:

Meet Joe Black. I'm one of the few that really liked the film, but that score is just magnificent & never fails to move me.

Judgment Night. Again, decent film, but I've probably only watched it about 10 times since its release in 1993, whereas the soundtrack I've listened to hundreds (or possibly thousands) of times. It's an all-time classic.

As was the case with Jerry Goldsmith in the 80s.

Into the Wild (decent film though Eddie's soundtrack is on another level)
The Crow (as a male millennial the film is a like a monumet to my generation... but saw it just a few times in my youth and listened endlessly to the soundtrack
Sometimes John Carpenter (I enjoy his films, but in a few cases I'd pick the soundtrack over the film)
Anytime Tim Burton and Danny Elfman worked togehter (not a fan of the director)
aaaaannnddd... dare I say it?
Anytime Ennio Morricone and Sergio Leone worked together (but in this case I am a fan of the director)
