Sony Pictures One Fine Morning (2022) (Sony Pictures Classics)

Sony Pictures Classics will be releasing Mia Hansen-Løve's One Fine Morning (Un beau matin) on April 11th.

Classic: the film doesn’t hit UK cinemas until three days after this Blu-ray comes out, despite the fact MUBI were one of the production companies on the film!

Though far from the first time this has happened with a title Sony Pictures Classics released in the US, as with Son of Saul, Elle, The Red Turtle, Never Look Away, After the Wedding, The Burnt Orange Heresy, Frankie, French Exit

Great film and highly recommended. Also a return to form for Mia Hansen-Love after her only bad film to date Bergman's Island.

Anybody know if it is region locked? (I suspect it is but Sony Classics do release some region free Blu Rays)

I got a copy today and can confirm it’s at least regularly playable on Region B players.

However this is a totally disappointing release with fatal encoding issues.
Macroblocking throughout the entire film. Grain moves in a swarm-like pattern. Visible in motion and even stronger when pausing.

This is the worst disc I’ve seen so far from Sony Pictures Classics. The disappointment is even greater considering the lack of extras with the film therefore receiving an entire BD-50 on its own.

MUBI releases a BD in August which is hopefully solid. I’ll sell this disc right away without watching the film.

This is another Sony MOD title. I don't know what outfit encodes for them, but I doubt it's Sony themselves, because a couple other Sony MOD titles have had really weird encoding. For example:

Perhaps an error was made somewhere in the process of putting "The Song of Names" on Blu-ray, but the disc only offers roughly 11 GB for a 113- minute-long film. The AVC encoded image (2.39:1 aspect ratio) presentation wrestles with artifacting throughout the viewing experience, with darker scenes highlighting blockiness and banding.

Quote:
Sony Pictures Classics' new Blu-ray release of Indochine appears in its originally composed ratio of 1.85:1 on this MPEG-4 AVC-encoded BD-50 (disc size: 25.63 GB)...although Sony's authoring and compression are subpar. Indochine runs 160 minutes and Sony has encoded it at an average video bitrate of only 14487 kbps. I noticed a little banding, but only during the mother-daughter scene shown in frame grab #14.
It would be interesting to see a BDInfo scan on this disc to see if odd encoding is the culprit.

Wow, so that has happened before. How disappointing. I don’t have either of these discs otherwise I’d have commented back then.

It’s weird to see pretty much (or actually) nobody mentioning what is a huge issue with One Fine Morning and seemingly with the other two as well.

Sony should have really taken care of this earlier since these SPC releases are very expensive for how little they offer. As such, these are absolute fan-only, niche releases for a small group of buyers. But I like to believe that these buyers are exactly looking for things like good authoring, at least I do.

If the film transfer on the disc looks worse than a trailer stream on Apple TV, something is very wrong with how Sony approaches these releases.

Weirdly though, Living looks great from what I saw. That also compelled me to get more SPC releases, including The Traitor which also is far from perfect sadly having subtitles that are out of sync and video encoding issues as well.

Edit: The 4K Blu-rays in SPC’s Anniversary UHD set are in the same category. Run Lola Run for example is affected by clipped highlights even in Dolby Vision similar to the Three Colors Trilogy sets that got releases in the UK.

I wouldn't be surprised if they used something that was intended for streaming.

I would have been much happier if they used the streaming master if the trailer (!) on Apple TV looks better than the entire feature. But even that would be a huge disappointment considering again the lack of extras, multiple languages and the capacity of a BD-50.

Thanks for the warning, I was about to add this to my Amazon order, since it's got a good discount. Too bad MUBI encodes aren't all that great either?

P.S: Also thanks for the Wings of Desire information, although I'll double or tripple dip on that anyways

Do you have any recent MUBI releases in your collection? I think their encodes have vastly improved in recent months. They’ve come a long way, yes, but in my mind their encodes are all but disappointing.

Of course, you could feel different but I think their Aftersun BD is one of the best of the year. Bergman Island looks excellent as well. I have no doubts that One Fine Morning and Return to Seoul (another rather disappointing SPC encode) will be in the same category.

Besides, MUBI BD’s are vastly cheaper than SPC discs and usually have more extras. I can only recommend that you give their new discs a try.

Got my MUBI BD today and it’s a revelation compared to the SPC.

Fantastic encoding and all-around gorgeous to look at.

Thank you MUBI, this is a real treat of a physical media release. They‘ve really stepped up their game after having some disappointing early BD releases like Suspiria but now they‘ve become beautifully consistent. Aftersun also looks phenomenal.

If you can, please support their BDs. I wish they‘d do more and UHDs too.
