HBOMax has the 4K restoration in Dolby Vision and it looks great, looking forward to the disc

Yup, hopefully. I think The Searchers is suffering from the same fade problem as Rio Bravo, & it looks like they've come on leaps & bounds in fixing this problem. I hate the look of The Searchers Blu-ray, so a remastered 4K Searchers next please.

Anyway, I'll be buying the 4K Rio Bravo release.

I'm in. There are far too few classic westerns on 4k, and Warner is squatting on a whole pile of great ones. At least this one is breaking out.

Finally, & none too soon, what took so long?

The current 2007 HD-DVD 1080p (hand-off) marketed as a Bluray (instantly identifiable as HD-DVD by the Microsoft VC-1 video encoder) just doesn't cut it. The video quality is terrible. This a very good movie & deserves a proper HD remastering along with a proper DTS-MA or Dolby Atmos audio, not the poor 192 ac.3 audio track.
Hope the UHD movie shows up soon.

The 2015 reissue at least has lossless mono. Same video encode though.

I certainly hope the spinning disc doesn't look like the 4K Dolby Vision version streaming on HBO Max. There is a lot of digital tomfoolery going on in there, including some heavy DNR and frozen grain.

It could be the stream, but the stream of Giant (1956) looks damn close to the disc (which sucks, but not as bad as Rio Bravo), plus I'm also looking at the stream of the superb East of Eden (1955) in 4K Dolby Vision and it looks amazing. No glaring streaming issues.

Are the original elements of Rio Bravo known to be poor, as is the case with Giant? We knew Giant might have some issues, because the elements were poor, but I have no idea the state of Rio Bravo's negs.

Surprised they didn't do Searchers first. It's only considered one of the greatest American films ever made.

From what I've read, The Searchers requires a more complex restoration as the original elements have been problematic when doing past home video releases.

I took a peek at it last night and Nope'd out with the quickness. Not enough grain coupled with possibly too much HDR is the ultimate yuck for a classic movie. Fingers crossed the disc at least brings more grain
