In The “Profound & Universal” ‘Sound Of Metal’ Riz Ahmed Is A Drummer Facing Hearing Loss – Toronto

In Darius Marder’s Sound of Metal, Riz Ahmed is Ruben, a drummer who loses his hearing in the midst of a nomadic music tour with Lou (Olivia Cooke), and finds solace in the deaf community.

Before filming, Ahmed embarked on an intensive six-months of drum lessons. But still, he claims his skills are not up to scratch. “I should not play the drums at all,” he says. “Luckily the kind of genre that Ruben exists in is one that is more about passion than technical prowess. It’s very much a cathartic form of expression for him.” The physicality of it also proved a full-on workout. “Drumming is great cardio,” he says. “I’d be in a sweaty studio in Brooklyn all day, just dripping sweat.”

That would be enough work for some actors, but as Ruben begins to panic over his deafness, he is gripped by his addiction issues, so Ahmed also delved into researching that. “I’ve been in and around that world and seen up close what addiction can do to people,” he says. “It’s something that I’ve been intimately familiar with.”

There was a third challenge, too. Ruben ultimately embraces his deafness and finds the kinship he needs within the deaf community, so Ahmed also had to learn American Sign Language. “I was very grateful to Jeremy Stone, who was my ASL teacher,” he says. “He was someone at the heart of the deaf community in New York who really welcomed me.”

As Ahmed threw himself deep into these facets of Ruben’s life, he found himself deeply affected. “It was really immersive,” he says. “It was about respecting these cultures and sub-cultures as communities.” And the work has had a lasting takeaway: “I’m just so grateful to have experienced having made this film,” he says. “It’s one of the special experiences of my life.”

I'm excited for this one! Riz Ahmed and Darius Marder sound like an interesting match.

Opens theatrically this weekend, ahead of the Amazon premiere on Dec. 4th. We're also getting Mank & Embattled, and The Wizard of Oz in 3D IMAX!

Powerful watch. Saw this at a festival last year and it left a lasting impression. I still think back on this film's experience. Experience is the right word, as you're not in for a story, you're in for a sensory change of perspective. Apparently it had been gestating for a long time, and it was hard to get money for a project like this (from the Q&A with the producer). It's small money magic made out of passion. Riz Ahmed embodies the experience with complete authenticity.

Seeing as this is about to see a wide release, I just want to give this a recommendation. It won the audience award at said festival. Not affiliated, this is my actual opinion.

Great little movie. Riz is terrific, but the standout for me was Paul Raci. Broke my heart.

It's not without its share of cliches and Hallmark moments, but Sound of Metal doesn't devolve into how the protagonist becomes the champion of the deaf community, and Riz Ahmed brings a lot of heart to his part, as does Olivia Cooke as his partner.

But is the film actually trying to say that deaf folks should remain within their own community of similarly abled people than try to return to the mainstream world? The Riz Ahmed character is a musician (and a lover of music), why would it be wrong for him to want to have hearing instead of being told to be content as a deaf guy?

[Show spoiler]he's in a rehab group for the deaf. The biggest thing you need in that group is acceptance so you can get past your other demons. He couldn't accept his disability (which is perfectly fine and his right), but that causes him to not be accepted into the group.

It's like he said: " you're acting like an addict", even though he wasn't on any drugs

Was expecting/hoping the narrative would go in another direction though.

Absolutely loved this movie and really hope we see nominations for Riz Ahmed as Lead Actor as his performance was flawless; Olivia Cooke for Supporting Actress as her performance i thought went above and beyond just a standard girlfriend role; and definitely a Supporting Actor Nom for Paul Raci whose performance in this was nothing short of perfect.

It was a movie I couldn't take my eyes off the screen, it held me the way few movies have in recent memory.
