Default Star Trek Discovery The Final Season aka Season 5 Blu Ray Steelbook

The steelbook for the final season of Star Trek Discovery aka Season 5 is up for pre-order at Amazon.

https://www.amazon.com/Star-Trek-Dis...=ATVPDKIKX0DER

As usual with Discovery, I like the art for the standard Blu Ray release more and will be going with that.

Despite having watched every episodes, with the except of season 2 I just couldn’t get into it. Having seen every episodes of the franchise previously I felt obligated to finish it but it definitely started to feel like a chore by the third season.

Since I didn't pick them up before, I'm going for the complete series box. I enjoyed Season 1. Didn't like Season 2. Liked Season 3. Didn't care for (or really remember) Season 4. Season 5 was alright. Overall, the show was fine. I hope Paramount won't use one of those giant cases to house 20 discs.

I'm collecting the individual releases of SNW, but I'll wait on a complete series set for Lower Decks. The only show I won't pick up is Picard.

At Wonder Con earlier this year, my husband and I met with a fellow who worked on DISCOVERY in different capacities. (We were wearing first-season Discovery Medical, Command and crew uniforms over the 3-day Con.) We discussed the diversity of the show which we all enjoyed very much. We also had a few folks stop by, tell us they loved our uniforms even though they did not enjoy the series.

Despite those who feel otherwise, I thoroughly enjoyed the series and am looking forward to buying the final season on Blu-ray. (I have loved every Star Trek series from TOS, which I watched from the premiere episode in 1966, thru every other series. I wish they were all in 4K, or at least in Blu-ray for DEEP SPACE NINE and VOYAGER.)

As a lifelong Star Trek fan over 40, I've met many cast and crew members from various series and movies at conventions since I was six. I once told my father, who didn't really enjoy Discovery and would complain about the many changes that were made, that it wasn't made for him. In fact, it wasn’t even primarily aimed at my generation but the one following. Those in their 20s and early 30s when it premiered in 2018 were the main audience. The Enterprise's appearance at the end of Season 1 was a nod to older fans, but even "Strange New Worlds" with episodes like "Subspace Rhapsody" and the brilliant "Ad Astra" are clearly designed to appeal more to viewers under 50.

I was initially hooked by the two-part premiere of "Discovery" but lost interest because it didn’t capture the essence of the older series I loved. However, my now-fiancé, who watched every episode, drew me back in toward the end of Season 1, and I’ve enjoyed the series since then. The diverse cast, the fresh take on the pre-TOS Enterprise, the dynamic between Spock and Burnham, etc., really won me over. Was it consistently great? No, but no Star Trek show always hits the mark. Even with TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY, or ENT, there are episodes I skip on re-watches, and I’m sure that’ll be the case here too. I’m still not fond of the dark Captain Lorca, but maybe that’ll change over time. Considering I still avoid Worf and Alexander episodes, we’ll see.

The focus on the Vulcan concept of IDIC (Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations) is a fitting way to describe this series. It's a beautiful message of acceptance and understanding, one that resonates with those of us who have loved and engaged with Star Trek over the years. The franchise continues to teach me about accepting differences and striving to understand, love, and live despite them.

And that's telling (for the show, not for you). One of the taglines for "it's not your daddy's Star Trek" from 2009, like it was some kind of bragging rights...and it's the exact opposite of what Star Trek is about. It was truly disheartening that a franchise built upon exploration, mutual understanding, and a future where we moved past our differences to make a better world now sells exclusion as feature. Star trek wouldn't have lasted a year originally if Gene and company had operated under the same premise.

I'm glad the fans of it are getting a steel, but that TNG, DS9 Voyager, and even Enterprise don't have steels (and TOS got a lackluster one) is unfortunate.

My dad really enjoyed the Kelvin films. When I say the new shows weren’t made for him or even my generation, it signifies progress. Some people embrace change and progress, while others prefer to remain in the past. I’ve seen many complaints since the 2009 film and DISCO first aired, criticizing the technology for not matching what we’ve seen in past shows, with jokes about lens flares and Apple store aesthetics. But these critiques extended beyond aesthetics. We saw the first major gay relationship among command crew members and a humorous gay engineer, which seemed to trigger selective amnesia among the older crowd. They started picking and choosing what to remember based on their now more conservative ideals, likely influenced by age and nostalgia.

It’s funny how often people forget about Jadzia, though.

What I’m trying to convey is that some of us are comfortable with change, and Star Trek has always been an excellent medium for presenting life lessons about change and progress in an accessible way. However, some see Star Trek as a time capsule, holding on to their vision of the future from 1966, 1994, or 2003, without adapting to new perspectives. So yes, it might not be tailored for my father’s generation or even mine, but it’s still Star Trek. It still upholds the ideals that Star Trek has championed since its inception: that diversity, change, and progress are positive forces to embrace in life.
