![]() ![]() Now HERE's an announcement to get excited about! Philip Kaufman's excellent THE GREAT NORTHFIELD MINNESOTA RAID (1972) gets its domestic Blu debut from Shout Select this July! Quote:

I'll have to get this one! I went to college in that town back in the 80s!! In fact, they still have Defeat of Jesse James Days in September there with reenactment of the bank robbery.

Bought this on Blu-ray recently and watched it yesterday. Have seen it before.
It's got a rather detached feel to the narrative, which is punctuated by short bursts of action. Robertson and Duvall are both excellent, with the focus being on the former's role. The baseball scene should have been edited down. There's a fairly convincing period-feel and level of quotidian detail overall, with any wider landscape shots always firmly anchored to this deliberately mundane aesthetic. At certain points it reminds me a little of Bad Company (1972). If it can be categorised as a revisionist Western, then it's certainly a notable entry in that rather fluid genre. |
