I was wondering what would be a better TV. I really wanted an LCD but would rather have the SIZE.
I was wondering how the Sony 70" SXRD stacks up to The new 52" Sammy's out there. Any feedback? Thanks Pred... |

I have a Sony KDS-60A2000 and would never trade it for an LCD. If you have the room, go for it. Everything looks great on mine. I could never get anything under 60" for my main viewing room (I upgraded from a 65" Toshiba 1080i).
Since Sony is discontinuing their RPTV, you might be able to get a good deal. |

If you can find one, go for it. I believe they recently began giving you an extra lamp (life span for me, with heavy usage, was about 2 1/2 years) and even my 1080i set is still a joy. All that real estate is sweet, get it if you can. |

I personally prefer LCD's; however, if you want the size, go for the SXRD, it is among the best. I would really recommend getting the warranty though, cause I've heard stories about bulbs going, and issues with calibrations.

Well, like most have stated on this, the SXRD is the better overall buy if you have the space, good veiwing angles and want the bigger more impactful image. As far as the technology goes, the SXRD is an LCD in a way. Its really our old friend the LCoS with Sonys name twist to get a catchy X in there. Silicon X-tal Reflective Display or an LCD chip being attached to a silicon back so it can then be used like a DLP chip. What that means to the industry is brands like Sony, who does not want to pay TI for the DLP rights now has a cheap alternative to rival the technology. Technically the SXRD (LCoS, D-ila) technology is in ways superior, but at this time and probably forever will not be flat so it is dumed to fade into obscurity.

Thanks guys for all your help.
I was also wondering if it suffers from the same issues that the DLP tech does? does it fade to black at certain angles or is there anything else I should know about it? |

Size does matter, when I watch my friends smaller TV, I feel like I am only watching TV, I can't get into the movie as much.
I love my Sony 70" SXRD XBR2 and was very disappointed Sony stop making the 70" XBR5. I don't understand why they do that, I have the money on my hand and ready to make the purchase. What's next Sony? To get a 70" OLED I might have to wait for years before it comes out and mostly likey it will be super expensive. I want the XBR5! ![]() |

We have the 60A3000 at home and it's awesome. The picture quality is better (IMHO) than just about every LCD and Plasmas at the local retailer today. I asked the sales associate to put the demo disc for the latest Samsung LCD on the A3000, and he was really surprised to see that the A3000 did a much better job than the top line Samsung LCD, esp with scrolling text and color display. A friend with a 50" plasma compliments on the film like picture quality on the A3000.
It's really up to you... my gf and I want picture quality over something that hangs on the wall. But that's just us. ![]() Last edited by cris; 02-04-2008 at 05:19 AM. |

I have the Sony 60a3000 too. It is absolutelly awesome, picture is amazing on Bly-Ray. I've always been a fan of Sony tv's, been getting nothing but sony for the last 15 years. For me it was a simple choice, bit if you need more opinions, get on Amazon.com and look at all the reviews for the 60a3000.

"I own the SONY KDS-55A3000. What I'm about to say might come across as heresy, but here it goes... In "normal" and ambient lighting settings, this television rivals most plasmas I've seen (there, I said it). And in a typical dark setting (all lights turned off), the blacks are excellent! For me, I do not care for wall mounting, so that was never an issue. What is an issue to me is the viewing angle. According to the manual, the ideal viewing angle is 60 degrees perpendicular to the vertical and 130 degrees perpendicular to the horizontal which I believe to be true. This I do not mind since I enjoyed a slightly narrower viewing angle from my SONY KDF-55WF655 LCD RP. What I do find a little annoying is that when deviating from the "sweet spot," the picture does not uniformly fade. What happens is that whatever is eye level is a little bit brighter than what's above and below. You'll notice it more when bobbing your head up and down. it seems that the lower the resolution viewed, the more it's noticeable. Right now, I have Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer playing, and it's barely noticeable outside of the "sweet spot." When I have Food Network HD on, It's more apparent. Other than that, it's practically the perfect TV for me. Does anyone else know of the 'phenomenon' I speak of?" Also, I was watching Black Hawk Down last night with a couple of friends. You can see virtually see every pore, folicle, sweat bead, and speck of dirt on the soldiers' faces when almost at a close-up. Very nice indeed. |

I prefer my SXRD over LCD (family members have LCDs). Get the size that fits your room. I have the 50" and it's awesome. The bulb, however, will burn out will need to be replaced. And that concerns me as the line is discontinued. How long will bulbs be available?

I was lucky enough to get a 70" XBR2 last August and still think it has better picture quality than the best LCD's (Samsung 71 series, Sony XBR4,5) and also the Pioneer kuros. The size is the icing on the cake - I would no longer be satisfied with a smaller TV. Watching blu-ray on this set is a true cinematic experience!

It is a true shame that Sony is discontinuing the SXRD line. I have a 50A2000, and it offers a true film-like picture with incredible detail. A couple of friends opted for the Sony 46 inch 1080p LCD, and the difference in picture quality and detail is noticeable in favor of the SXRD. Ditto when compared to my Soyo Crystal Series 720p/1090i 32" LCD.
If I had to do it all over again, the only thing I would have done differently is buy the 60 inch version. That's how much I love the picture. |

I have a Sony KDS-R70XBR2 70" SXRD and it's pretty amazing. I had the TV calibrated by Jeff Meier who is well known in the AVS forums and he gives free advice on TV's. This guy had some pretty high tech calibration equipment and has a load of experience with each of the technologies (LCD, DLP, Plasma, and LCoS). The calibration took about 3 hrs and he discussed audio and video the entire time he was over. He said for anything over 50", outside of a projector, he felt the R70XBR2 is pretty much the best you can buy and owns one himself.
I have no complaints whatsoever with the TV. The picture was awesome but after I had it calibrated, it's spectacular. When friends come over, they are just blown away by the picture. Obviously a good cable feed is key, but standard definition channels look good and high def, blu-ray, and PS3 games are awesome. BTW, it comes with an extra lamp. |
