Default Project Octopath Traveler - 2018

Coming in 2018. Demo is out now.

Anyone try this out yet? I played it for an hour or so last night, and I'm sold. It's been a trend for a while now to have an updated take on retro graphics, but I think they found a unique look with their "2D-HD" style that they've established here. The game is just absolutely gorgeous, and I love the giant enemy sprites vs. the tiny hero sprites in the battles, which obviously evokes SFC/SNES-era RPGs like FF (or I guess even FC/NES).

The Weak/Break/Boost aspect of the battles is interesting, though it seems like it would be very difficult to defeat even the weak enemies without making use of it.

The game is made by the Bravely Default team, which I loved, so I'll definitely be paying attention to any future games they develop. They seem to have really mastered the art of giving an updated take on the traditional RPG.

I enjoyed it so far. The battle system will take some getting used to and it feels like it's probably going to be a pretty good game in terms of a challenge.

Maybe I missed it but was there a way to change the voice language to Japanese from the start of the game? I had to wait until I had control of the character before I was able to do it.

I thought I only saw "New Game" and "Continue" on the main screen.

Typically demos lack any option settings.

Yeah, it doesn't appear there is an option for it until after you can access the in-game menu.

Anyway, I completed the demos for both Olberic and Primrose. I started with Olberic, and I think I've basically completed everything that I could, including side quests, recruiting Primrose, maxing the levels (seems levels are capped at 15 for the demo), etc. and I got a good 3 hours out of it. For Primrose, I just finished the boss fight and ended there, since everything else I could do would pretty much be the same as playing with Olberic.

Anyway, I will definitely be purchasing this game once it's released.

One major thing I think they could do without is the vignette and the blur effects they've got going on. It makes it really difficult to tell where you can/can't go on the map and makes it really easy to miss the treasure chests. I suppose it could be intentional, but it seems unnecessary.

I wasn't planning on playing the demo (I'd rather just play the full thing at release) but I ended up in my hometown for a few days with nothing to do so I gave it a download

Played through Primrose's part this morning and thought it was really awesome. The graphics are great, the music is good, and I enjoyed the battle system. Gonna check out Olberic later today or tomorrow.

Already planned on picking it up when it came out but now that decision is even more affirmed. Excited for this one!

Started the Olberic story over the weekend. Not really excited how much damage enemies seem to take right out of the gate. Hopefully that's just a demo thing to show how the combat works. I just don't like high damage totals in my rpg's at the start of the game.

I could also do without the short noises or words people say every time you press to advance dialog. Either make it full speech or nothing.

Other than that it's what I expected. A little heavy on the vignetting for my tastes. I'd appreciate a little more visibility across the entire screen and not just towards the center. Music is pretty good so far.

I'll have to wait for reviews. My rpg backlog is big enough as it is.

I thought for sure Octopath Traveler was a working title. Very odd name for a game.

Well, they dropped the "Project," though I suppose that was expected. Honestly, it wouldn't have made sense for them to change the title at this point, considering that is the title everyone knows it as at this point. Honestly, I don't think it's really a bad title. It doesn't sound that ridiculous IMO, and at least it makes sense--8 paths for 8 characters. Now Bravely Default, that was a bad title.

Anyway, I'm really interested in the Job system here. I was expecting each character to be assigned a role and that's it. I loved combining abilities in FFV, so it's exciting to see an evolution of that.

New trailer with some info on party members, abilities etc.

The game is looking very good. Probably the bit I liked the most was it noting that you can jump around character stories and complete all 8 in a single playthrough. That was big for me as I was worried it would take multiple playthroughs to see them all and I hate replaying games.

I did a replay of the demo as Primrose and was reminded of how much I liked the combat as well, so I went ahead and preordered from Best Buy.

I'm intrigued. I like the art style. It reminds me of Final Fantasy Tactics.

Not a fan of the graphic style at all. I can appreciate 2D graphics, but at least put some effort into it. I don't want to feel like I'm playing an SNES game, otherwise I would play an SNES game...

If you think this game took no effort, then you need to get your eyes checked. Unless you think SNES games actually looked like this:

I like the art style, I just don’t like the random battles. It got annoying in Zelda 2, it got annoying in Final Fantasy, and it was annoying in this demo.

The ONLY time random battles weren’t annoying was pokemon, and that’s because it was how you caught them so there was a point to them.

I'll have to give this another go. The first demo didn't sit well with me.

In the first demo, I played as the Dancer. So this time around I picked the Hunter. Now there are twice as many random battles.

At least the story is interesting. Still undecided if I want this or not.

Same, actually. I’ll give this new demo a shot before I commit to a purchase.
