Soul Music........Help???? - Blu-ray Forum

Oh, it's just me again. My hard drive is already full with all the other genres that I have to listen to, but I thought I'd get a head start with asking for help on this. I already have a folder for funk. And I know there is some crossover, so I'll skip James Brown & Sly and The Family Stone as I've already put them in with my funk artists. Let me tell you, some funk comes REALLY close to disco at some points. Anyway, back to the matter at hand. Asking you kind people for suggestions for soul music artists. I haven't started at all yet, and I do think this will be my last "genre music folder", as other types of music besides most of the ones I've been working on here I'm "expert" at. So fire away, and let's see who I've been missing all these years in the realm of soul!

If you haven't already, definitely check out The J.B.'s. Their 2-cd, Funky Good Time: The Anthology is a great introduction. Also check out The Meters. Their 2-cd, Funkify Your Life: The Meters Anthology (The Josie Years + The Reprise-Warner Bros. Years) is a great place to start.

You've got the Motown sound from Detroit; The Temptations, Supremes, The Marvelettes, The Miracles, Marvin Gaye etc...) & Philly soul (The Delfonics, The O'Jays, Teddy Pendergrass, Lou Rawls, The Spinners, The Stylistics etc...).

That should lead you to all of the other great artists in the genre, like Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, Percy Sledge, Edwin Starr, Wilson Pickett, Curtis Mayfield etc...

Check out the soundtrack to The Commitments and seek out music by the original artists.

...good place to start for classic soul music.

I think a lot of modern pop bands have incorporated some aspects of funk and soul into their music. The last album by the Ting Tings is pretty much pure funk. Adele, Maroon 5, Duffy, Florence + The Machine, all have a bit of a soul flavor to them.

One of my latest favorite bands is Thievery Corporation, which is probably best categorized as downtempo, but they have a wide range of influences and a lot of their tracks can be listened to as funk/soul. Morcheeba is kind of the same.

.. and the soundtrack for Standing In The Shadows of Motown for the same reason. I also highly recommend the film as well, for an essential education on the Funk Brothers, they deserve your appreciation for all they did for Motown and R&B/soul

There's also some concert footage by various vocalists with the surviving members of the Funk Brothers, & interviews. Joan Osborne's performance of What Becomes of The Brokenhearted is the most notable imo. I also highly recommend the film, The Temptations, wow, what a story!

I'm hoping these lists of different genres might help others that come along afterward looking for essential artists. I'll do some research on wikipedia and see who else I come up with. And by the way....here's a list of genres I've got/had....can anyone tell me if I've overlooked anything????

Blues
Metal
Funk
Jazz
Classical
Reggae
Soul
Country

I know all of the above have many sub-genres, but I tried to include as much as possible in each one.

So, more soul & any genres I've totally overlooked. Thanks!!!

Gotta ping you on one of my favorite genres that seems to be overlooked.

I see a disturbing lack of electronica, unless you left it off on purpose. Subgenres of that ought to include dance, trance, techno, break beat, big beat, house, drum and bass, dubstep, downtempo, ambient, nu-jazz, acid jazz, electro swing, trip-hop, industrial, and maybe other stuff I forgot about.

Some of it can probably be grouped in with other genres (like pop, jazz, metal), but it may depend on how finely your categorize your collection.

EDIT:
Also, not sure if modern score music (films, TV shows, games) would warrant its own category. I'd personally make it distinct from classical.

I'm not sure about it actually. I don't care for Dance, Trance, Techno, Trip-Hop. Don't know anything about dub-step, electro swing, and very little about ambient. Who would be some artists of those sub-genres that I know nothing of, or ambient, or straight up electronica artists, which I know nothing of either. I'd also be interested in artists in film score music (I already have tons of Goblin though) Thanks for the heads up.

I finished my research, and posted what I found. If there are any glaring omissions, please let me know. Also, I'm going for more of the classic soul period, so artists from the 90's on up probably won't be of interest to me.

You could probably add Sade, her best albums are in the 80s

Honey Cone - so much incredible stuff from them. "Take Me With You" is an absolute gem
Freda Payne - especially the Payne and Pleasure album
The Three Degrees - the International album is my favorite from them
Syreeta - her first 2 albums were written by Stevie Wonder and are amazing
