Default The Lady from Shanghai (1947)

http://www.amazon.com/Lady-Shanghai-...inment+blu-ray

Quote:
The Story Of A Reckless Woman!

Baffling murders, fascinating plot twists and remarkable camera work all contribute to this spellbinding, time-honored film noir written, directed by and starring Orson Welles. Hired to work on a yacht belonging to the disabled husband of femme fatale Rita Hayworth, Welles plays an innocent man drawn into a dangerous web of intrigue and murder.

The subject of great controversy and scandal upon its initial release, The Lady From Shanghai shocked 1948 audiences by presenting Hayworth with her flaming red hair cut short and dyed champagne blonde. Fifty years later, The Lady From Shanghai is considered vintage Welles, his famous hall of mirrors climax hailed as one of the greatest scenes in cinematic history.

Based on the novel If I Die Before I Wake

Technical Aspects:

1080p High-Definition Video from a 4k Digital Restoration
Presented in Original Aspect Ratio of 1.37:1
DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0
Subtitles: English
Black and White / 88 minutes
New Artwork with Double-Sided Packaging

I wonder if it will be the same transfer as the TCM one.

Silly logic. They should have released Gilda instead.

As a Canadian, I'm jumping for joy.

The TCM shipping charge to Canada is more than the cost of the Blu-ray!

I love Rita Hayworth and it broke my heart not to be able to buy the Blu-ray. I'm not dirt poor but I have to be realistic about my Blu-ray budget...and that doesn't allow for $25.00 shipping charges for one disc.

I would actually prefer it to be like the first TCM one but maybe with better bitrate.

Mill Creek only works with what they're given, so as long as they given a good master, this should be decent. Plus, you'll probably be able to find it for about $5 in many places.

Didn't see this coming. Does this mean the TCM release is OOP,or going to be?

Yeah, this is pretty out of the blue.

I'd love to see Mill Creek elbow its way into the catalog mix beyond slapping two okay transfers on a single disc and calling it a day.

It would be nice if they could slide into the slot Image used to occupy.

I'm skeptical (for now). This seems like a very odd choice to go to Mill Creek, especially after it's already been released by TCM.

Actually, it makes perfect sense that this would go to Mill Creek.

Mill Creek has released a number of older Sony/Columbia titles on Blu-ray (most of which were very well done). In the case of their recent Ray Harryhausen double feature, they released movies previously released by Sony themselves.

So it seems entirely logical that a Sony/Columbia catalogue exclusive would eventually go into wide release with Mill Creek.

The TCM release is currently "On Order". I wonder if they've already stopped selling it

But in this case 'eventually' is only a year.

That does seem a little odd.

I never ordered the second TCM release since the screenshots were so dark. Hopefully this has a nice video transfer with lossless audio.

I figure this will probably have the darker transfer and subtitles so nobody can be completely happy with any of the three Blu-ray releases.

That does seem a little odd.

Think of the LADY FROM SHANGHAI "exclusive" more like a Best Buy, amazon or Target exclusive and it doesn't seem odd at all.

Companies like Twilight Time and Shout/Scream are Blu-ray publishers. They buy rights, negotiate and/or produce extras and are ultimately responsible for the end product. I understand why they would negotiate longer periods of exclusivety.

TCM shop is...well...a shop. They call themselves "The Official Store of TCM".

So, if you think of TCM Shop as a retailer and NOT a BD publisher, then a 1 year window of exclusivety makes sense.

I don't pretend or claim to have any special insight into TCM's business so I don't claim to speak with authority. But, again, there is a logic here which is not at all unusual. We know Mill Creek releases Sony/Columbia catalogue titles. We know that Mill Creek releases Blu-rays of movies that have been previously released. We know that retailer exclusives are usually time limited to less than a year. Therefore, I see perfect logic in Mill Creek releasing a Sony/Columbia title after it had a brief period of retail exclusivety with TCM Shop.

Lady from Shanghai was part of TCM's Vault Collection so it's not really comparable to any sort of timed exclusives or anything. Typically these exclusives stay that way, so any way you slice it, the shift to Mill Creek is odd

Yeah if this was normal we'd have seen The Iron Petticoat by now, which TCM have had for over 2 years.

The Iron Petticoat is different in several ways. TCM actually bought the North American TV rights from Hope Enterprises for ten years and the Blu-ray release is part of that larger TCM agreement. So, for all practical purposes THE IRON PETTICOAT is a TCM title for the next 7 or 8 years. They basically own the film until into the next decade. I'm pretty sure TCM has no ownership stake in LADY FROM SHANGHAI.

Furthermore, I'm not even sure Mill Creek would want THE IRON PETTICOAT if it was offerred to them.
